1977 Chevy Monte Carlo Seventies Time Capsule on Bring a Trailer
Chevy's wildly popular Monte Carlo brought "personal luxury" to the masses in the 1970s.
Hundreds of thousands were sold, but how many were preserved and driven fewer than 6000 miles?
This example also nails the look with its green livery, white vinyl Landau top, and turbine wheels.
The year is 1977. Radio Shack has just introduced its TRS-80 Micro Computer System, but most Americans are more interested in the latest breed of machines coming out of Detroit: "personal luxury" cars. At nearly 18 feet long and with a V-8 under its long hood, this Chevy and cars like it are just the thing for cruising Main Street, with Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" on the stereo, as you make your way over to the local movie theater, where a little sci-fi flick called Star Wars is packing 'em in.
This 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau coupe, resplendent in green on green with white vinyl seats and a landau top, transports you right back to that time. For sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), this car is, as the kids say, a whole vibe. And with just 5600 miles on the odometer, it's a time-capsule late-'70s experience for those of you who missed out on the Me Decade the first time around.
Chevrolet moved a little over 400,000 Monte Carlos out of showrooms in 1977, but this has got to be one of the nicest ones left. Originally sold in Des Moines, Iowa, it's in astoundingly well-preserved condition, especially underneath.
The color combination is doing plenty of the heavy lifting here, but this is a nicely optioned car for its era. A tilt steering column, cruise control, and air conditioning are all requirements for a base-model car these days, but the original buyer here paid extra. They also optioned turbine-style wheels, rally mirrors, and that landau roof. Pure class.
Under the hood, a 305-cubic-inch V-8 works hand in glove with a three-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission to get all of 140 horsepower to the ground. But hey, when you look this good, there's no need to hurry. Lazy power steering and power-assist front disc brakes further reduce effort levels for some truly laid-back motoring.
This Monte Carlo previously sold on BaT three years ago for $24,000, and there's no reserve on this auction. It'd be the ideal ride to have if you were going to film a period-correct drama about the Carter Administration, or just to have something to go with the leisure suit you dug out of your grandfather's closet.
This Chevy will transport you back to a time before anybody knew Darth Vader was a dad. Life was simple then. It moved slower. But it looked spectacular.
The auction ends on October 22.
