As Hemmings explains, the Pontiac Grand Prix was all-new for 1988, debuting the front-wheel drive GM W-Body platform alongside its corporate siblings, the Buick Regal and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Initially, the 3.1-liter V6 offered only 130 hp, but Pontiac struck a deal with ASC and McLaren-the US tuner, not the F1 team-for some serious upgrades. ASC and McLaren, who had previously created the turbocharged 1987 Buick Regal GNX, fit the Grand Prix with custom bodywork, revised suspension, and a big Garrett turbocharged.

That gave the Grand Prix Turbo ASC-McLaren an impressive output of 205 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. The only gearbox option was a four-speed automatic, which helped the Grand Prix hit 60 mph in 7.0 seconds.

All this was expensive though-having ASC and McLaren work their magic on the Grand Prix cost over $5000, but you got a lot for your money.

All this was expensive-the ASC-McLaren package added $5000 to the price of the Grand Prix. Pontiac threw in a standard heads-up display and power seats with adjustable lumbar and bolsters, both of which were rather novel in that time. And like other Pontiacs of the era, it had more steering-wheel buttons than you could ever hope for.

Fewer than 3500 Grand Prix ASC-McLarens were built; this one, listed on Bring a Trailer, is a particularly great find. And with bidding up to just $2500 at the time of writing with two days left on the auction, it might be a great deal, too.
