2017 Acura NSX

C/D Overall Rating:

The legendary NSX, touted as a supercar that’s easy to live with on a daily basis, is reborn for 2017 with a trendy hybrid powertrain. Don’t confuse this low-slung car for a hyper-miler—it has serious performance chops, though it can’t quite hang with similarly priced nonhybrids from McLaren and Porsche. The twin-turbo V-6 sings when pushed hard, and it can be shut off to allow the NSX to tiptoe on electric power alone. The cabin is comfortable for two, but a dearth of storage space counters Acura’s daily-driver claim. Additionally, a frustrating infotainment system and a smattering of low-rent switchgear are not up to scratch.

What’s New for 2017?

To say that the second-generation NSX shares nothing with the first generation, production of which ended in 2005, would be an understatement. From its carbon-fiber-and-aluminum-intensive construction to its all-wheel-drive hybrid-electric powertrain, the NSX is completely reimagined for 2017. Despite being modernized, the NSX draws inspiration from the original. Its easygoing nature and excellent outward visibility are still its best features, making it more accommodating than most supercars when driven daily.

Standard Feature Highlights

• 19-inch aluminum wheels
• Tilting-and-telescoping steering column
• LED interior ambient lighting
• 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment with nav, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto

Trims and Options We’d Choose

With the NSX’s base price of $157,800, we’d take it easy on the options since most of them do nothing to improve performance. We would, however, spec the carbon-ceramic brakes for $9900 (black calipers) because they provide phenomenal stopping power. We’d also choose the $1500 leather-and-faux-suede-lined seats, as they add power adjustments, lumbar support, and two-position memory for the driver—luxuries no $157,800 daily vehicle should be left without.

We’d recommend the optional Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires that came on the car we tested. In our experience, these aggressive tires improved handling, braking, and acceleration to a point worth dropping an extra $1999; the Pirellis can be ordered through the dealer. Acura offers plenty of exterior and interior extras that can easily push the price over $200,000, but spending cash on improving the NSX’s striking styling is equivalent to staging a fireworks display in view of the aurora borealis. Instead, our lightly optioned NSX is the sweet spot, but it’s still $171,199.

C/D Engine and Transmission Rating:

While it will certainly satiate your need for speed, the NSX can’t outpace some key rivals. Its electric-only Quiet mode, though, gives it something its rivals don’t have: discretion.

The NSX’s hybrid-electric powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with three electric motors for maximum totals of 573 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. The V-6, the nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and one of the electric motors work as a team to power the rear wheels. The other two electric motors operate independently to drive the front wheels, effectively making the NSX all-wheel drive. With acceleration from zero to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and from zero to 100 mph in 7.0 seconds, the NSX is far from slow. Among supercars, it’s not as quick as the non-hybrid competition, such as the McLaren 570S, nor is it as fuel efficient as the BMW i8.

Because of its electric motors, the NSX can cruise silently for short distances in Electric mode. With electric motors on board, we expected instant acceleration, but in our NSX test car, we noted a delayed response to throttle inputs. Once the NSX gets the message, its take-off thrust could knock the wind out of an unsuspecting passenger. The transmission shifts seamlessly in Quiet mode, but it turns abrupt in Sport, Sport Plus, and Track modes.

C/D Fuel Economy Rating:

Don’t expect Toyota Prius levels of fuel efficiency here—the NSX is still a supercar in this regard. To make matters worse, in our real-world testing, its non-hybrid rivals managed to sip fuel at a slower rate.

Hybrid powertrains are more efficient in stop-and-go city traffic than their gasoline-only rivals, and the NSX is no different. An EPA rating of 21 mpg city beats the Audi R8 V-10 by a whopping 7 mpg, and it elbows past the McLaren 570S. The Porsche 911 Carrera 4S matches the NSX’s 21-mpg rating in the city and beats the NSX on the highway with a 28-mpg rating. The outlier in this group is the BMW i8. Like the NSX, the i8 is a hybrid, but it has a larger battery and can be plugged in to charge. This nets it an attention-grabbing fuel-economy rating of 76 MPGe combined, even though that can only be achieved over very short drives.

Fuel Economy Ratings Compared

We perform our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.

In this real-world test, the NSX returned an EPA-beating 23 mpg, but the McLaren 570S beat this by 1 mpg. Although the i8 doesn’t accelerate as fiercely as any of these, its many fuel-saving tricks allowed it to return a much higher figure of 39 MPGe.

Highway Fuel Economy, C/D Test Results

The NSX’s highway cruising range is 360 miles based on our testing, but the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S offered an impressive 500 miles per tank. The NSX’s high-tech hybrid powertrain isn’t calibrated for fuel economy or long-range cruising; it’s performance oriented first and foremost. In fact, eco-minded driving enthusiasts would be better served by the BMW i8, or even the 911.

C/D Performance and Driving Impressions Rating:

Razor-sharp handling is expected from a supercar, and the NSX delivers while adding a more compliant ride quality than some of its rivals. Adaptive dampers and adjustable electric-power steering give it a variety of driving modes to fit a range of situations; strong, fade-free brakes inspire confidence on the road and on the track. The heavy hybrid powertrain adds weight, and the NSX isn’t as fast as the competition, but by any measure, it’s still a rapid automobile.

Acceleration

Around town, the NSX is quick, but it’s easy to manage in traffic, and, despite a delayed response to throttle inputs, its power is easy to modulate. We managed a lightning-quick 3.1-second zero-to-60-mph run using the standard launch-control system. When engaged, the engine revs to 2250 rpm, and when the brake is released, the NSX takes off with little drama. Through the quarter-mile, it managed a time of 11.2 seconds at 126 mph. Both of those figures are slower than the best competitors, even if these distinctions are largely irrelevant for those planning to do most of their driving on the street.

Acceleration, C/D Test Results

Ride, Handling, and Steering

In Quiet and Sport modes, the steering is direct and accurate but light to the touch, which we think is an attempt to make the NSX feel maneuverable on a day-to-day basis. Such a setup, however, feels out of place on such a performance-oriented vehicle. In Sport Plus and Track modes, the electric-power-steering system dials in more weight, which is appropriate. Regardless of the setting, the steering is crisp, and the car responds smartly to small wheel inputs.

Braking

The solid-feeling brake pedal suggests strong braking performance, and the NSX’s 142-foot stop from 70 mph in our testing confirms it. The NSX performed consistently, and even after six hard stops, it exhibited no brake fade (when brakes overheat and stopping distances increase as a result). The Audi R8, despite being roughly 200 pounds lighter, needed 153 feet to stop from 70 mph, while the McLaren 570S needed 151 feet.

C/D Interior Rating:

Touted as the everyday supercar, the NSX is certainly comfortable and intuitive enough for just about anyone to use as a daily driver. But its cabin doesn’t have the premium feel and luxurious amenities one expects from an Acura, let alone one that is meant to compete with the best from England and Germany.

Interior Space Comparisons

Getting in and out of the NSX is a challenge—as is the case with most supercars—because of its low seating height and wide doorsills. Once inside, though, the driving position is agreeable, and the cabin ergonomics are first rate.

While we recorded the same 76-decibel reading at a 70-mph cruise in both the Acura and the Porsche, the 911 is noticeably quieter at both idle and wide-open throttle, scoring 54 dBA and 88 dBA in those tests to the NSX’s 57 dBA and 94 dBA. The sound of a supercar’s engine at full song is an essential part of the experience, and while the NSX is certainly loud, we find it less stirring than a Ferrari 488 or, frankly, a 911. When driven gently, the NSX can sound bland and uninspired. Conversely, the Porsche has a lovely burbling exhaust note even under light throttle.

Our test car featured the optional leather-and-faux-suede seats, faux-suede headliner, and carbon-fiber-trimmed steering wheel. The bright red leather appealed to the younger among our staff, but some found it garish and juvenile. While the seats are comfortable, we’d prefer more thigh support, and enthusiastic drivers will likely desire more side bolstering, as well. A driver-facing 4.2-inch digital gauge cluster provides vehicle information such as speed, engine rpm, coolant temperature, and fuel level, and it also changes color depending on which drive mode you select. In Quiet mode, the graphics take on a cool blue hue, while Sport Plus and Track modes turn everything an aggressive shade of red.

Interior Features

That the steering column is manually adjustable and offers meager tilting-and-telescoping range is a disappointment, as are the buttons, switchgear, and infotainment screen that have been gratuitously cribbed from the Honda parts bin. Yet another annoyance are the cupholders that seem like a total afterthought; their unit is put in place by inserting a plastic tab into a slot located on the side of the center console. This reduces the passenger’s knee room and dominates the glove compartment when not in use.

Seating Height

The driver and passenger sit quite low to the ground in the NSX—just 13.2 inches from the road, to be exact—but that’s not out of the ordinary for this segment. To accurately measure seating height—the distance from the road to the driver’s hip—we use an H-Point Machine (HPM), a precisely engineered device marketed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. This versatile tool, along with some lasers and simple trigonometry, also reveals the width and location of roof-pillar visibility obstructions. Our H-Point Machine and laser measurement tools determine the length of road obscured by the hood as well as the road obscured by the trunk or hatch (as seen through the rearview mirror).

Blind Spots and Visibility

Large side windows and narrow A-pillars aid side and forward visibility, as does the sloping hood that drops completely out of view once you’re inside. Thicker C-pillars do create a visibility issue over the driver’s shoulders, but well-shaped side mirrors that are mounted on long arms provide a good view of what’s behind, ultimately minimizing blind spots.

Roof pillars protect occupants in a rollover crash, but they also create blind spots. We determine visibility by measuring the location and width of each pillar using an H-Point Machine and a laser beam (surrogates for a driver and eyeball, respectively).

C/D Infotainment Rating:

A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with integrated navigation comes standard and is hooked up to an eight-speaker audio system; an ELS Studio nine-speaker setup is optional, as is SiriusXM satellite radio. Like some other interior parts, the touchscreen system is taken from lesser Acuras and Hondas, and the same complaints we have about them apply here, too. The system’s interface already looks outdated, and we found the menu setup to be unintuitive. To make matters worse, its lack of redundant buttons and the odd touch-sensitive volume slider, which makes precise adjustments difficult, add an extra layer of complexity.

Infotainment Features

Bluetooth phone and audio streaming is standard, and the quality of both is good, although callers will certainly hear the NSX’s turbocharged engine if the driver is being liberal with the throttle pedal. Two USB ports (one inside the glovebox and one behind the console) provide opportunities for charging smartphones and linking devices to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both of which are standard.

C/D Cargo Space and Storage Rating:

For something marketed as the everyday supercar, the NSX’s interior storage cubbies aren’t especially commodious. Its smallish trunk is located right behind the engine, which might be problematic for hauling ice cream home from the supermarket.

Cargo capacity in the NSX is disappointingly limited. There’s a four-cubic-foot area at the back of the car that’s mere inches from the engine bay, but it’s so small that it can’t hold even one carry-on suitcase. The BMW i8 at least managed to fit one carry-on suitcase inside its trunk.

Cubby Storage

There are precious few storage opportunities in the cabin of the NSX; the majority of storage space is a console bin situated between the driver and passenger.

Why do we use ping-pong balls?

To determine the interior space available to stash travel essentials, we’ve devised a range of measuring protocols. We use six beverage containers ranging in size and shape to gauge cupholder accommodation. We stack, stuff, and arrange 9-by-14-by-22-inch cardboard boxes to quantify the number of airline-carry-on-size suitcases that will fit in a trunk or folded seat’s cargo space. To measure irregularly shaped gloveboxes, door pockets, and console bins, we fill each container with 1.5-inch-diameter ping-pong balls. It’s tempting to convert the number of spheres to a volume (cubic inches), but we resist that calculation because—as with the box of tissues, 12-ounce can of soda, or gallon of milk you might stash in these compartments—there are voids between the balls. Random packing (our procedure) nullifies approximately one-third of the available space. The negative space between the balls could theoretically be reduced to 25 percent of an irregular shape with precise stacking, but while we might be pedantic, we’re not crazy.

C/D Exterior Rating:

No one will argue that the NSX doesn’t look the part of a supercar. Its edgy styling, low-slung dimensions, and numerous vents and bulges give it the eye-catching costume that sports-car buyers love.

Overall length is similar to that of the McLaren 570S, although the NSX is shorter by two inches and narrower (without mirrors) by six. The Porsche 911’s width, by contrast, is a narrow 71.2 inches. At only 47.8 inches high, the NSX is very low, which could make ingress and egress into the cabin difficult for some.

Exterior Measurement Comparisons

Exterior styling of the NSX looks every bit as exotic as its rivals. Acura’s trademark jewel-eye headlamps angle inward and down over gaping air intakes. The vented hood starts low to the ground and angles back sharply; it meets a steeply raked windshield that arcs over the cockpit before sloping beyond the mid-mounted engine compartment, where it culminates beautifully at a subtle tail spoiler. Vents and protrusions along the body sides provide downforce and cooling for the hybrid powertrain.

C/D Safety and Driver Assistance Rating:

Its lack of active safety features and absence of crash-test data might pose a concern for safety-minded consumers. A comprehensive standard airbag system and standard backup camera provide an acceptable level of protection.

Crash-Test Results

Two agencies evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates tested vehicles from one to five stars in front crash, side crash, and rollover tests. NHTSA also assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. The non-profit, independent, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) uses a different set of tests to evaluate front and side crashworthiness, roof strength, headlight reach, and ease of child seat installation. IIHS grades cars on a scale from Good to Poor in each test, and awards the cars that perform best across all its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the vehicle’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well in IIHS’s tests.

As with many of its low-volume rivals, the NSX has not been subjected to any crash testing by NHTSA or the IIHS. Its carbon-fiber-reinforced construction is known to be rigid and strong, and it will likely provide a good amount of protection in the event of an impact.

Active Safety Features

Being a two-seat sports car, the NSX is perhaps purposely light on high-tech safety gear. You won’t find the latest features such as automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, or even a driver’s-side knee airbag. These things, which could’ve increased its 3 stars from us, take up space within the car’s tight envelope and add performance-robbing weight to the equation; instead, Acura has taken a minimalist approach. Even the spare tire has been ditched in favor of a tire-inflation kit. Front, side, and curtain airbags are standard, as is a backup camera. One child-seat tether is offered on the passenger’s seat to enable taking Junior along for the ride of his life, but a lack of complementing anchors means installing the seat itself isn’t easy.

C/D Warranty Rating:

Acura provides some of the most comprehensive coverage in the segment. While a four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty is offered by both Audi and Porsche, neither provides as much powertrain coverage as Acura due to the fact that the NSX is a hybrid. The NSX’s sophisticated hybrid-electric components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles.
