For driving enthusiasts, nothing satisfies like a sports car-but the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 comes close, and it requires no compromises for passengers or cargo space. Opt for the fastback GLC43 coupe and you'll get one that even looks like a sports car-or at least a sports SUV. The standard 362-hp twin-turbo V-6 rocketed both GLC43 models from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds in our testing. Underneath their suavely styled sheetmetal are an adaptive suspension and all-wheel drive, which provide unnaturally sporty handling for an SUV. But the GLC43s are not alone in the high-performance-crossover marketplace: numerous manufacturers ranging from Porsche to Jaguar offer models that compete with these two swift Mercedes-AMG SUVs.
What's New for 2018?
Not much has changed for 2018, and that's not surprising considering the GLC43 and GLC43 coupe are only entering their sophomore year. Mercedes-AMG's new Track Pace app is now available as a $150 option (but requires the addition of the $2200 Multimedia package), and a performance exhaust system joins the options list for $1250. Mercedes also now offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the GLC43; the two features are bundled together in the Smartphone Integration package for $350. For 2018, the GLC43 is joined by the utterly mental V-8–powered GLC63, which can be had with up to 503 horsepower; we review that model separately.
Trims and Options We'd Choose
We'll leave it to you to decide between the conventional-looking squareback GLC43 (with a base price of $57,245) and the racy-looking GLC43 coupe (which starts at $61,395), but in either form we'd suggest checking the boxes for the premium Burmester sound system ($850) and the Multimedia package ($2200), which adds:
• 8.4-inch infotainment display with navigation
• Real-time traffic and weather updates via SiriusXM Travel Link
• Touchpad controller
The final thing we'd add to our GLC43 would be the optional 21-inch wheels with summer tires for $1000. Normally we find that wheels this large deliver a stiff ride when coupled with a sport-tuned suspension, but on the GLC43 they improve cornering grip without sacrificing ride comfort. Plus, they look dope.
