2019 Cadillac CT8: Taking on the Establishment

What It Is: Cadillac’s new flagship sedan, should that be the vehicle format the top Caddy takes. Even larger than the CT6, the CT8 will take on the establishment in the luxury-limo class and be the technology and styling leader for the brand.

Why It Matters: Cadillac has to prove its status as a global competitor to the Germans, Jaguar, and Lexus, and the brand needs to demonstrate that it can command six-figure prices. Having a stylish and technologically advanced car in the S-class league might just do the trick.

Platform: Like the CT6, the CT8 is built on the Omega platform, designed for rear- and four-wheel-drive applications. Thanks to a clever mix of aluminum and high-strength steels, it should undercut the competition by several hundred pounds.

Powertrain: Look for a twin-turbocharged V-6 and an all-new twin-turbocharged 4.2-liter V-8 with close to 500 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid will likely be offered as well.

Competition: Audi A8, BMW 7-series, Jaguar XJ, Lexus LS, Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes-Benz S-class.

What Might Go Wrong: Cadillac is in flux and trying hard to elevate itself to global-luxury-brand status. The CT8 needs to be stunningly beautiful and strikingly free of cheapness; if it is a compromise, don’t even bother.

Estimated Arrival and Price: Late 2018 or 2019, priced at more than $90,000.
