  • The new 992-generation Porsche 911 is finally available to order with a manual transmission.

  • The seven-speed gearbox will be offered initially on Carrera S and 4S coupe and convertible models.

  • We're glad to hear that the manual is a no-cost option compared to the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic PDK transmission.

Though many sports cars are now automatic-only, Porsche is sticking to its guns and continuing to offer a manual transmission on the new 992-generation 911 sports car (#savethemanuals). The seven-speed manual is now available to order on 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 4S models in both coupe and cabriolet body styles, and it's a no-cost option over the standard eight-speed dual-clutch automatic PDK transmission.

Porsche kindly includes the Sport Chrono package as standard on all manual-transmission models; this package ordinarily costs $2720 extra. For the manual car, the package includes a rev-matching function in addition to dynamic drivetrain mounts, a sport mode for the stability control, and a steering-wheel-mounted driving mode switch.

The manual-equipped 911 also uses a mechanical limited-slip differential as opposed to the PDK car's electronic limited-slip differential. Opting for the manual saves 84 pounds compared to the PDK. We don't know yet how or if the manual transmission will affect horsepower and torque numbers for the Carrera S's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine.

Porsche quotes a slower zero-to-60 mph time for the manual car compared with the PDK, claiming the Carrera S with the seven-speed does the deed in 4 seconds. We think it will be a bit quicker than that. (The Carrera S PDK we tested went from zero to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds.)
