Some 2024 Toyota Tacoma Owners Could Get a New Transmission
Some 2024 Toyota Tacomas with the eight-speed automatic transmission could be in line for a new transmission assembly and torque converter, according to a technical service bulletin posted to the Tacoma4G forum. This comes after dozens of complaints about premature transmission failure and shortly after Toyota recalled over 100,000 Tundras and Lexus LXs for engine failure.
Don’t call this latest Tacoma news a recall, because it isn’t one (yet), but certain Tacomas could still be getting new transmissions free of charge. Toyota’s TSB calls out a range of VINs – you can find the sheet linked on the forums here – that could possibly be affected by the transmission gremlins owners are reporting. The specific driving signs of transmission failure are not spelled out in the TSB, but owners in the forums and in official NHTSA complaints suggest they noticed hard shifting, limp mode activations, and the truck refusing to shift into certain gears.
The condition that will trigger this TSB and transmission replacement under it, though, is one or more of six specific diagnostic trouble codes being present. One of them suggests the torque converter clutch actuator is stuck off, and the other five are pressure control solenoid actuator failures. If you bring your 2024 Tacoma into the dealer with these conditions, you may end up with a new transmission installed free of charge.
This issue does not affect Tacomas with the six-speed manual transmission, as the TSB specifically notes it’s related to the automatic version. Since this is only a bulletin, there's no promise that every truck in the range of affected VINs will receive a new transmission without showing specific signs of failure. There’s always the chance Toyota escalates this to recall-worthy, but that could depend on how widespread the issue truly is. In the meantime, check your truck, and know that Toyota is both aware of and fixing the problem on affected pickups.
