2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Gains an Off-Road XRT Trim and a Rear Wiper
The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets refreshed and introduces an off-road-ready XRT trim.
The XRT sits nearly an inch higher, rides on all-terrain tires, and has improved approach and departure angles.
For 2025, the Ioniq 5 lineup has more driving range (thanks to bigger batteries) and adopts a NACS charge port. It now has a rear windshield wiper too.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been a hit since it arrived for the 2022 model year, winning Car and Driver's EV of the Year award and earning a spot on our 10Best list. While sales have steadily risen since the angular EV's introduction, Hyundai decided to refresh the Ioniq 5 for 2025 with restyled bumpers, a reconfigured dashboard, and (finally) a rear windshield wiper. A new XRT trim joins the lineup too, sporting tougher looks and a 0.9-inch suspension lift.
Bigger Batteries and a NACS Plug
The styling changes are minimal, but the new front bumper gives the Ioniq 5 a planted look with a wider black section surrounded by bolder chrome trim. Hyundai also added a reworked rear spoiler and new wheels with improved aerodynamics. Three new colors are available—Atlas White Matte, Ecotronic Gray Matte, and Celadon Gray Matte—and Hyundai says the rear wiper was added in response to customer feedback.
Under the bodywork, Hyundai slightly boosted the capacities of the Ioniq 5's batteries. The Standard Range goes from 58.0 to 63.0 kWh, while the Long Range's size increases from 77.4 to 84.0 kWh. Hyundai expects longer range figures as a result, with the all-wheel-drive models going from 260 miles to over 280 miles, according to the automaker. The rear-wheel-drive Long Range sees its claimed range rise from 303 miles to more than 310 miles, and the SE Standard Range model will improve from 220 to 240 miles. Official EPA ratings should arrive soon.
Another big upgrade is that the 2025 Ioniq 5 becomes the first Hyundai to be fitted with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing the EV to be plugged in at over 17,000 chargers on the Tesla Supercharger network without an adapter. Initially, some 2025 model year Ioniq 5s will be sold with the older Combined Charging System (CCS) port, but by the fourth quarter of 2024, all new Hyundai EVs will feature the NACS port.
A More Ergonomic Cabin
Hyundai also reorganized the I5's interior with new HVAC controls and upgraded screens. The old setup, which featured a pair of 12.0-inch screens, is replaced by two 12.3-inch displays that now run wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Hyundai also added physical buttons for oft-used functions—the heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, and parking assist—on the center console behind the cupholders and a relocated wireless charging pad. The steering wheel design is also tweaked, and all Ioniq 5s except the base SE model feature heated rear seats.
There's a host of improved safety systems too, including upgraded remote smart parking assist and lane-following assist. The adaptive cruise control system has also been honed and blind-spot collision warning is now standard on the base SE trim.
Exploring Off-Road
Hyundai's off-road-optimized XRT trim expands to the Ioniq 5, promising improved capability when the tires leave the pavement. Along with the slight suspension lift, the XRT rides on unique black 18-inch wheels wrapped in 235/60R-18 all-terrain tires. The XRT is only offered in dual-motor all-wheel-drive form with the Long Range battery.
The XRT also wears a unique front end featuring a bumper in a "digital camouflage" finish with a rectangular trim piece that houses the Ioniq 5's pixel design motif and a pair of red tow hooks. Those tow hooks can pull up to 5834 pounds, Hyundai claims. The rear bumper gets a similar look. The rest of the trim, including the window surround, badges, and mirrors, is blacked out.
Between the unique bumpers and the taller ride height, the approach angle improves by about 2 degrees to 19.8 degrees, while the departure angle is nearly 5 degrees better at 30 degrees. Inside, the XRT gets a black headliner, leatherette seating with a special pattern and an XRT logo on the seatbacks, and XRT-badged all-weather floor mats. The XRT will be offered with two exclusive colors: Ultimate Red and Cosmic Blue Pearl.
Coming This Fall
The 2025 Ioniq 5 is the first vehicle to be assembled at the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America factory in Georgia. This will allow the Ioniq 5 to now qualify for a $3750 federal tax credit, and Hyundai says it expects the Ioniq 5 to earn more federal tax incentives in the future. Hyundai also says that those who decide to lease the Ioniq 5 will be provided with a $7500 credit from Hyundai. The 2025 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 5 XRT will reach dealerships this fall.
