2025 Nissan Versa Is the Last Sub-$20,000 New CarNissan
  • The 2025 Nissan Versa is the last new car you can buy in the United States for less than $20,000.

  • The Versa's manual-equipped base model starts at $18,330, while the top-spec SR trim has a $22,330 starting price.

  • Nissan's subcompact sedan also adds standard LED headlights and three free oil changes as part of a new complimentary maintenance plan.

Just last year, you could count the number of new cars with price tags that start below $20,000 on one hand, which was disappointing but at least there were options. Now you can count the number of sub-$20K new cars with one finger. For the 2025 model year, Nissan keeps the truly affordable new car alive with the Versa, which starts at $18,330.

Nissan's front-wheel-drive subcompact sedan features a 122-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder and three trim levels. The base S model is the only one that comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission. Opting for the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) adds $1800, raising its base price to $20,130.

The Versa lineup also includes the SV and SR. The latter adopts a sportier appearance with the addition of a dark chrome grille, black 17-inch wheels, and a rear spoiler. The SV starts at $21,630, and the SR starts at $22,330. The SR's surcharge does include adaptive cruise control and a larger 8.0-inch center touchscreen. Plus, its interior is trimmed with orange accents and trim-specific upholstery to go with its leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats. The new model year also brings standard LED daytime running lights and headlamps as well as complimentary maintenance, which includes three oil changes for the first two years or 24,000 miles.

The Versa's sole role as the last sub-$20,000 new car was cemented earlier this year when Mitsubishi decided to pull the plug on the Mirage hatchback and Mirage G4 sedan. The 2024 models started at $18,015 and $19,115, respectively. While it's definitely a bummer that there are so few new cars that cost less than $20K, there are really good options for not too much more money. Along with the Versa, Nissan sells the notably improved Kicks for about $23K. The Chevy Trax also starts just over $21K and was named to our Editors' Choice and 10Best lists, proving an inexpensive new car can be impressive.
