The 475-Horsepower 2018 Dodge Durango SRT Is a Charger Scat Pack With Seven Seats

From Road & Track

It may be hard to remember, but the Dodge Durango has been around in its current form since 2011. It did, however, get a refresh for 2014. After this many years, you might think the Durango deserves a redesign. But that's not really FCA's style. Instead, it gets a performance variant-the Durango SRT.

The Durango SRT isn't what we'd call a complete surprise. We've heard rumors it was coming for a while now, but it also seemed like an inevitability. If the corporate 392 would fit in the Durango, why wouldn't Dodge offer it?

That logic apparently sounded pretty good to Dodge, too, so here it is. Making 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, the new Durango SRT will hit 60 mph in a claimed 4.4 seconds and will run the quarter mile in 12.9. For comparison, the Mercedes-AMG G63 takes 4.8 seconds to hit 60 mph and is nearly a half second slower through the quarter mile.

You also get a performance-tuned all-wheel-drive system and seven different drive modes to choose from. In Track mode, the system will send up to 70 percent of the power to the rear wheels. Sport mode reduces that figure to 65 percent. In combination with stiffer suspension and a beefed up rear sway bar, Dodge promises the Durango SRT offers "outstanding high-speed cornering capability."

The hood scoop is also functional, as are the heat extractors. To complete the performance package, you also get Brembo brakes at all four wheels, active dampers, and an "unmistakably deep" SRT-tuned exhaust. Disappointingly the Durango SRT comes from the dealer with all-season tires, but Pirelli P Zero three-season tires are available.

Inside the cabin gets the obligatory sportier look thanks to carbon fiber trim pieces and "performance Laguna leather." You also get a flat-bottomed SRT steering wheel, velour floor mats, a suede headliner, suede-wrapped A-pillars, and lots of SRT logos.

Dodge also offers a day at Bob Bondurant's performance driving school to any Durango SRT owners. After all, it is the "Dodge Charger of the full-size SUV segment."
