Aston Martin Celebrates 60 Years of Bond Partnership with DB12 Goldfinger Edition
James Bond hasn't always been an Aston Martin devotee, as exampled by his wheeling of Toyota's 2000GT and even a BMW 750iL, but the two have always been meant for each other. At least that's how it feels after 60 years of partnership between the classic British automaker and the James Bond franchise. To mark that anniversary, Aston Martin is pulling the covers off a special edition DB12.
Officially known as the Aston Martin D12 Goldfinger Edition, the anniversary model will be built by Q, Aston Martin's ultra-luxury bespoke service, with a limited production run of 60 units. Based on the 2023-released DB12, the mechanical core of the Goldfinger Edition will remain largely unchanged from the typical DB12, featuring 671 hp and 590 lb-ft from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. However, it's in the little design details where the Goldfinger Edition really shines.
"The relationship between Aston Martin and the James Bond franchise is something that is always treasured," said Marco Mattiacci, global chief brand and commercial officer. "It is an incredible occasion to be able to recognize six decades of this partnership with an extraordinary special edition, and pay homage to the very first - and perhaps most famous Aston Martin Bond car."
The modern iteration of the Goldfinger car will be painted to match the Silver Birch color scheme of the timeless DB5 from the 1964 film. However, the presence of model-specific 21-inch wheels on the DB12 Goldfinger Edition makes it clear that we're no longer in the 20th century. Other Goldfinger Edition exterior touches include black brake calipers, gold side strakes, and shining silver Aston Martin badging.
The interior of the Goldfinger Edition is where the prowess of Q really shines. Leather sports seats come standard on the Bond model, tailored and stitched in the classic DB5 fluted style with a splash of the Prince of Wales check perforation pattern. Aston Martin says this is a nod to Bond's classic suit design and the royal pattern continues through the door cards and headliner, too. An eight of hearts’ has been embroidered onto the driver's sun visor, referencing the playing card seen in the last poolside draw scene set in Miami. A polished sill plaque with the Goldfinger 60th Anniversary logo, 18k Gold Plated interior accents, and a tracking device-inspired notched gear selector wraps up the interior customization.
Those 60 customers who are lucky enough to receive an allocation for the Goldfinger Edition will be showered with gifts as exclusive as the car itself, Aston says. The loot includes a custom car cover and luxury key presentation box, a Silver Birch Speedform model, and a 35mm film section of the Furka Pass scene in Goldfinger. Aston Martin is even producing a limited print of model-specific magazines for each of its owners. But how exactly will Goldfinger Edition owners carry all of this stuff? A Globe-Trotter attaché case with the Prince of Wales checks perforation pattern interior, of course, though the magnum of 2007 vintage Champagne Bollinger will have to be carried separately in the Globe-Trotter Air Cabin Case. Rough life.
Details about how exactly you can get in line for a DB12 Goldfinger Edition have yet to be released, but we suspect it will be highly exclusive. In all likelihood, all 60 of the units may already be spoken for, as is the case with many limited production-run performance cars. Either way, the first deliveries of the Bond commemorating model will start next spring.
