From Road & Track

Porsche developed a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for the Panamera Turbo, and this motor will soon find homes all over the Volkswagen Group. We've already heard it testing in the next-generation Cayenne, and pretty soon, it's going to appear in a new Audi model. Evo reports that we'll see this 4.0-liter V8 in the upcoming Audi S8, which is set to debut next year.

If you follow Porsche and the rest of the VW Group closely, this news isn't a surprise. Porsche was tasked with V8 development for the VW Group - though Lamborghini says the twin-turbo V8 in the upcoming Urus SUV will be its own - while Audi leads V6 development. Porsche's V8 is also mechanically similar to the Audi-designed V6 used in the new S4.

In the Panamera Turbo, this engine makes 550 horsepower, but Evo expects that it'll be de-tuned for use in the S8. Audi also has an S8 Plus model planned, which is set to borrow the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid's powertrain, but again, it'll produce less power than it does in the Porsche.

Another point of difference between Porsche and Audi are their transmissions of choice. While Porsche mates this 4.0-liter V8 with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, Audi is expected to use a ZF eight-speed automatic.

Our colleagues atCar and Driver report that the regular A8 will at some point receive a 460-hp V8 to slot above its standard V6, and that we won't get the W12 in the US.

Previously, the S8 used a lovely, Audi-designed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produced 605 hp in the S8 Plus. That engine will surely be missed, but this new Porsche-designed unit sounds like an improvement too. We're very curious to see what it does with plug-in hybrid assist in the S8 Plus.
