June 19: Ford GT40s sweep Le Mans with a 1-2-3 finish on this date in 1966
To put Ford's 1-2-3 victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on this date in 1966 in context, it's worth remembering that the Ferraris of that era were nearly as dominant then as Audi is today; that Ford had lost badly in 1965 despite spending millions the year before, and that Henry Ford II, grandson of Henry Ford, had made it his mission to beat Enzo Ferrari on his home turf. The photo here showing the three Ford GT40 Mk.IIs crossing the finish line in formation was possible because the Carroll Shelby-tuned GTs had literally run the competing Ferraris to the ground hours before, in what may be the single greatest race ever won by an American automaker. Hear the sound of victory below.
