Thirty-three years ago today -- on May 3, 1980 -- Cari Lightner, the 13-year-old daughter of Candice "Candy" Lightner, was killed by a drunk driver in Fair Oaks. Calif. At the time, drunk driving was not considered a serious crime and offenders routinely escaped serious punishment, prompting Candy Lightner to describe the act as "the only socially accepted form of homicide." The tragedy inspired her to organize Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), and the world soon followed her lead.
