BMW M Has Nothing On The GT3 RS And The AMG GT R

The BMW M4 GTS is a truly special car, but as a distant relative to the 3-Series, it'll never be a proper sports car. This really isn't rocket science. The question comes down to engineering, and we need to take into consideration what resources car companies have to play with.

Take Porsche for instance. Its GT3 RS, like all 911s is built on a dedicated sports-car platform. So, to make it handle like a dream and go like a rocket, all its GT department needed to do is replace most of the standard car's with motorsport parts, using all the know-how it's gathered around race track recently. It's still an extensive job, but the base car is more than happy to take the upgrades.

Then comes AMG, the performance brand that goes way further than simply tuning Mercedes-Benz products. Its second self-developed sports car, the GT, is a powerful contender on its own, but when the time came for it to go up against 4-liters of naturally-aspirated Porsche thunder, AMG also pulled out the big guns. The GT R represents at least two steps forward compared to the GT S, with four-wheel steering, a wider track and even more power. And the results are impressive.

This is where BMW finds itself in hostile territory. Because deep below all the cool stuff that makes it so nice, the M4 is just the fast version of a two-door 3-Series. And there's nothing wrong with that. Yet when the M people tried to turn it into a club racer, all they ended up with is a highly boosted engine featuring water injection, and a very stiff suspension that makes the GTS barely useable as a street car on the UK's bumpy roads. Which you could live with, as there's a reason you went for the cage option.

Except it isn't, because in the end, this pricey, ultra limited-edition M4 is just not that fast. And certainly not GT R fast, let alone GT3 RS fast. At which point, the whole adjustable splitter/golden cage package becomes professionally applied mascara, no more.
