In its current form, the BMW i3 is a competent city car, but it's no hot hatch. Its 170-horsepower motor is enough to keep the 2600-lb. electric car from feeling slow, but the handling isn't up to par. When BMW refreshes the i3, though, that may change with the addition of a sporty version.

Autocar reports that a facelifted i3 will arrive towards the end of next year, and when it does, buyers will have the option of springing for an enthusiast's model. Reportedly called the i3S, it would offer more BMW-like handling, as well as better acceleration. It probably won't be significantly quicker, but increased agility (and less-aggressive stability control) would go a long way towards making the i3 feel like a proper BMW.

Don't expect major changes to the regular i3, either. Autocar's source suggests BMW will spruce up the interior and make minor styling updates, but that's about it. BMW may increase the i3's electric range, as well.

Currently expected to be fully electric, the British outlet believe we will see the refreshed i3 at next year's Frankfurt Motor Show.
