BMW Skytop Greenlit For Limited Production Run
The beautiful BMW Concept Skytop revealed at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is officially going to see production. What it won’t see, though, is America.
Yes, BMW on Friday officially greenlit the Skytop for a limited 50-car production run, similar in scope to the 50-car run of the BMW 3.0 CSL. However, when queried if any of those 50 cars would be coming to the U.S., the answer was a resounding no from BMW.
“A production version of the BMW Concept Skytop shown at the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will be built in very limited numbers,” a spokesperson told Road & Track. “However, it will not be offered to customers in the United States, due to the prohibitively high costs of homologation for the U.S. market.”
If your eyes lit up at this news with the idea of perhaps buying one outside the U.S., we’re also here to inform you that all 50 examples are already spoken for. So basically, tough luck. The decision to bring the Skytop to production was an easy one, BMW suggests. A “rapturous response” from the automotive world after the reveal of the concept prompted BMW to get to work on making it into a reality. Adrian Van Hooydonk made the official announcement at a private event at the House of BMW in Milan, Italy with the concept on display.
“The BMW Skytop is a truly exotic design and offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level,” said van Hooydonk. “To finally be able to announce that this car will be built is like a dream come true. Thank you for the very positive response around the globe and to the passionate team that worked on the project.”
Those lucky 50 customers will enjoy the Skytop’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 625 horsepower, rocketing the convertible to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds via an eight-speed automatic and xDrive AWD system.
