Like the 3 Series, BMW has widened the successful 5 Series range to include a number of styling and powertrains configurations meant to suit a vast variety of needs and desires. The most recent changes are the inclusion of the brand's new 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder to the 528i model, as well as a new ActiveHybrid version capable of 23/30 mpg in the city/highway. The lineup benefits from such additions as Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto start/stop (528i and 535i), fuel-saving EcoPro mode (528i and 535i), and low rolling resistance tires. All models, except the ActiveHybrid 5, can be had with the brand's electronically-controlled xDrive all-wheel drive system and optional 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with paddle shifters too. While the 5 Series models are sporty in their own rights with the available M Sport Package (bigger wheels, new aero, M suspensions settings, unique badging), performance junkies should have a look at the all-new M5. With a beefed-up version of the 550i's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 outputting 560-horsepower, massive wheels and brakes, a bevy of suspension upgrades, and a number of drivetrain enhancements, the M5 is a certifiable rocket.
