BMW's M Division Is About to Make a Lot More Fast SUVs

From Road & Track

The BMW X6M is not exactly your typical M car. Nor is the X5M. But they'll both hit 60 mph in four seconds flat thanks to 567 twin-turbo horses and all-wheel-drive. That's pretty impressive, especially for an SUV. And soon, BMW's high performance division will be making a lot more hot utility vehicles.

Speaking to Australia's Motoring, BMW's vice president of sales and marketing for the M division, Peter Quintus, said "quite clearly there is potential in the SUV segment, and you will see in the near future some more M models."

Since we've already seen it testing on the Nurburgring, we assume the X3 is next up to receive BMW's M treatment. But Quintus would only hint that that's the case. "If you look at the sales volumes of our regular models, I'm sure you can see where the potential is," he said.

But while there will probably be M-badged versions of SUVs like the X1 and X4, don't expect BMW to build an M version of every single vehicle in its lineup.

"We have a little bit of a different philosophy than that of some of our competitors," said Quintus. "If you look at the current situation we have just 10 derivatives on the M side, the other competitors have double that number. . . Our philosophy is not to make every possible variant [an M car]."

That's good to hear. The world doesn't need a BMW M2 Active Tourer.
