The Brewers Association is in charge of putting together the Beer Style Guidelines every year and the official 2021 guidelines have been announced. This year's style guidelines include four new beers, which means you might find some new brews at the store soon enough.

The new brew styles include Kentucky Common Beer, Belgian-Style Session Ale, New Zealand-Style Pale Ale, and New Zealand-Style India Pale Ale. While these styles are new to the acceptable guidelines list, they aren't entirely new inventions.

Kentucky Common Beer, for example, is a brew inspired by a style of beer that was popularized in Louisville during the Civil War era up until prohibition, Food & Wine reports. An official from the Brewers Association told the outlet that "Corn grits or flakes were commonly used at a rate or 25- to 35-percent of the total grist. Minerally attributes resulted from the use of hard brewing water. These beers were consumed very young, going from brewhouse to consumer in as little as one week." Kentucky Common Beer is characterized by its subtle tartness that develops during fermentation.

Additionally, the New Zealand pale ale is said to have flavors like tropical fruit, passionfruit, stone fruit, cut grass, and diesel. The IPA will boast flavors that are floral, fruity, sulfur or diesel-like, citrusy, and grassy, making both of these options a bit easier to drink for those that veer toward fruitier, fresher, and lighter beers.
