You Can Buy an Entire 1960s Ford Racing Team at this Auction in August

From Road & Track

If you're a deep-pocketed fan of Ford and Shelby 1960s race cars, you really should head to RM Sotheby's Monterey auction this August. Six cars from the Jim Click Collection–regarded as one of the best Ford race car collections in the world–will be auctioned there, and each one is incredible. There's a Mk I GT40, two 289 Cobras, two Mustang Boss 302 Trans Am cars, and an original 1965 Mustang GT350.

Each one of these cars is an automotive treasure, but RM Sotheby's declares the GT40 and the 289 Competition Cobra as the highlights here. The 1966 GT40 is one of just 31 Mk I road cars built, though Click raced it frequently during his long ownership of the car. Its condition appears to be excellent based on the pictures provided, but hopefully, that won't deter the next owner from continuing to take it to the track. This car is estimated to sell for between $3,750,000 and $4,250,000 .

Less expensive, though arguably of greater historical significance, is the 1964 Shelby 289 Competition Cobra, chassis CSX 2473. It's said to be one of the winningest Cobras in existence, once owned by SCCA racer Don Roberts, who campaigned it successfully from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. RM Sotheby's says this Cobra is ready for historic racing today. CSX 2473 is expected to fetch $2,200,000 to $2,600,000 when it crosses the block.

The remaining four cars aren't as revered as the GT40 and the Competition Cobra, but they're still incredible pieces of Ford history. There's another '64 289 Cobra, which started life as a street car before being turned into a vintage racer, and a 1966 Mustang GT350, which had some competition success in SCCA B-Production racing.

Rounding out the collection is a pair of Mustang Boss 302s that raced in Trans Am in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The 1969 example was campaigned by Shelby's team and driven by none other than by Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt, and the 1970 car placed third in the 1971 championship.

None of these cars are cheap, but they're stunning examples of Ford's finest racing cars. Well-heeled Ford enthusiasts will no doubt be tripping over each other for the chance to buy these.
