And here we thought Porsche was slowly reverting to using numbers instead of those controversial names; when the current Boxster and Cayman were launched, Porsche added the 718 moniker. But at its 70th-anniversary event at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Porsche revealed the name of its upcoming electric sedan. Previously known as the Mission E, it will henceforth be called the Taycan.

Set for a launch in 2019 as a 2020 model, the Taycan will spawn a family of all-electric vehicles. Porsche confirmed "variants and derivatives" without giving specifics. The company says the initial model will feature two synchronous electric motors for an output of “over 600 horsepower.” Zero to 60 mph will take less than 3.5 seconds, the sprint to 125 mph will take less than 12 seconds. Porsche boasts that the car will “offer a consistent level of power that is unprecedented among electric vehicles: multiple launches in a row will be possible without a loss in performance.”

“Multiple launches” is not a very precise statement, but Porsche CEO Oliver Blume got more specific at the Vienna Motor Symposium in April. Pressed during a Q&A session, he revealed that stated zero-to-62-mph performance will be repeatable 10 times, and the zero-to-125-mph run can be done four times in a row. That's better than other high-performance electrics but certainly not enough for an all-out lap of the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife.

But what is the meaning of “Taycan”? Porsche characterizes it “Eurasian” since it’s based on Turkish, meaning “quick and lively like a foal.” To help everyone pronounce it correctly, Porsche sent out an audio file with the name announcement (click here to listen). But whatever you do, don’t pronounce it “trashcan.”
