Cast your vote for the Ames-area high school sports performer for August 21-27
Ames defeated Marshalltown by a 33-17 score, Nevada blanked Boone, 38-0, and Collins-Maxwell scored a decisive 69-28 victory over Woodward Academy during Week 1 of the high school football season.
In other area high school football action, Ballard fell to sixth-ranked 3A powerhouse Bondurant-Farrar, 36-7, Roland-Story suffered a 34-28 overtime loss to South Hamilton, Gilbert was dealt a 43-14 loss by Adel-Desoto-Minburn and Colo-NESCO suffered a 50-8 loss at the hands of Baxter.
The Ames volleyball team is off to a 3-2 start after sweeping Marshalltown at the new Harrison Barnes Court and Gymnasium and going 2-2 at the Skip Anderson Invitational in Bondurant. Ballard started off 6-0 after the Bombers swept Iowa Falls-Alden and claimed the Clarke Invitational title, and Roland-Story is 6-1 after going 3-0 at its home quad and 3-1 the West Marshall Invitational.
Nevada, ranked 11th in 3A, started off 1-3 after playing elite competition at the Ankeny Centennial Invite. Gilbert split its first four matches, Colo-NESCO started off 0-3 and Collins-Maxwell dropped its first two matches.
In cross country, the Ames girls placed third and the Little Cyclone boys took fifth at the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Invitational Aug. 23 and the Collins-Maxwell boys placed first at the Spartan Earlybird meet at the Center Grove Orchard between Cambridge and Maxwell Aug. 25.
Here are the area's top performers for the week:
Jalen Lueth
Lueth had a huge opening game for the Ames football team against Marshalltown Friday.
Lueth caught nine passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Little Cyclones to victory.
Dallas Sauser
Sauser also had a big night at quarterback for Ames against Marshalltown.
He threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns at quarterback. Early in the game, Sauser reached a big milestone by surpassing 5,000 yards passing for his career.
Noah Mills
Mills had an outstanding debut at quarterback for Nevada in its victory over Boone Friday.
Mills completed 15 of 23 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns for the No. 8 (3A) Cubs.
Drew Robinson
Robinson was Mills' top target at receiver during Nevada's win over Boone.
Robison made five receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns and he also tacked on a 9-yard touchdown run.
Luke Huntrods
Huntrods was strong on both sides of the ball for Collins-Maxwell in its victory over Woodward Academy.
Huntrods caught five passes for 44 yards and three touchdowns on offense. On defense he came away with two sacks.
Jonovan Wilkinson
Wilkinson had good night running the football in a losing effort for Roland-Story against South Hamilton.
Wilkinson picked up 117 yards on 17 carries, including a 57-yard touchdown run.
Lane Kenny
Kenny came up big in the defensive backfield during Ames' victory over Marshalltown.
He had four tackles and intercepted one pass. His play late in the second half was a big reason the Little Cyclones were able to pull away from the Bobcats.
Brooklyn Baumgardner
Baumgardner keyed the big 6-0 start for the Ballard volleyball team.
The 6-2 middle hitter finished the opening week with 26 kills on 34.8 % efficiency and she also had nine blocks.
Brenna Baumgardner
Baumgardner had a great debut for the Ballard volleyball team.
The Bomber freshman recorded 10 kills, eight blocks and seven aces during the week to help her team finish with a perfect opening week.
Lily Goos
Goos had a great opening match for the Nevada volleyball team against Winterset last week.
Goos recorded 16 kills on amazing 60.9% efficiency. She also came away with six aces, four digs and three blocks.
Ali Charlson
Charlson had a strong showing for the Roland-Story volleyball team during its opening week of competition.
Charlson recorded 102 assists, 35 digs and 20 aces on 75 of 85 serving over the seven Norse matches to start the season.
Sophia Timmermans
Timmermans turned in a productive opening week for the Ames volleyball team.
Timmermans recorded 17 kills, 14 digs, seven blocks and six aces at middle hitter in helping the Little Cyclones off to a 3-2 start.
Julianne Lundvall
Lundvall was outstanding for the Gilbert volleyball team in a loss to Humboldt to open the season.
Lundvall had nine assists and digs apiece plus seven kills and four blocks in three sets against the Wildcats.
Claire Helmers
Helmers had a great opening meet for the Ames girls' cross country team during the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Invitational Aug. 23 in Mount Vernon.
Helmers, ranked seventh individually in 4A to start the season, ran a 5-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 1.6 seconds to place second behind Mount Vernon-Lisbon's Lourdes Mason, who ran a time of 18:50.6.
Ethan Haus
The Collins-Maxwell senior earned the first meet victory of his career at the Spartan Earlybird Invitational cross country meet at the Center Grove Orchard between Cambridge and Maxwell Thursday.
Haus completed the course in 18:12.1, easily winning the race by 1:06.5 over Ankeny Christian's Daniel Schoening.
