Every Auto Brand's CPO Program

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programs take a lot of the risk out of buying a used vehicle. Whether you’re looking for a used mainstream sedan or crossover, or something with the added prestige and features that come with a luxury badge, a CPO vehicle can be a smart way to get the most car for your money.

But how do CPO programs compare? We've assembled overviews of every brand's CPO program so you can cross-shop them right here.

Not all manufacturer-backed CPO programs are the same. Some differences include the vehicle’s allowed age and total mileage, the details of the multipoint inspection process, and extras such as transferable or extended warranties, free roadside assistance, and the use of loaner vehicles during routine maintenance.

Programs also vary by their warranties. Some have a blanket warranty, while others have separate powertrain (engine, transmission, etc.) and bumper-to-bumper (air conditioner, infotainment system, etc.) warranties. In addition, some warranties measure their coverage from the original in-service date of the vehicle, while others grant additional coverage at the end of the original new-vehicle warranty or the purchase date if the original warranty is already expired.

While CPO vehicles often cost more than ordinary used cars, many shoppers appreciate knowing the vehicle they’re considering has undergone a high degree of quality control, has a verified service history, and is covered by a solid factory warranty that extends for years. If you’re looking to buy a used vehicle, having this added peace of mind can make for many years of trouble-free driving. Do your homework and you'll be prepared to deal.

Acura

  • Acura Precision Certified inspection points: 182

  • Acura Precision Used inspection points: 112

  • Acura Precision Certified eligible vehicles: 2022–2023 vehicles with less than 80,000 miles

  • Acura Precision Used eligible vehicles: 10 years old or less

  • Acura Precision Certified warranty: Powertrain—Seven years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date; Bumper-to-bumper—Two years additional or 100,000 total odometer miles

  • Acura Precision Used warranty: Comprehensive—Six months or 7000 miles

  • Acura Precision Certified roadside assistance: Two years or 100,000 miles additional

  • Acura Precision Used roadside assistance: One year or 12,000 miles additional

Acura has two CPO coverage levels to choose from.

Both come with basics such as a complimentary vehicle-history report, a satellite-radio trial, and roadside assistance. Acura Precision Certified vehicles also come with a three-month AcuraLink trial.

The most attractive feature, though, is that both include some degree of complimentary maintenance and an exchange policy. Acura CPO vehicles can be exchanged within seven days one of the longer exchange policies on the market.

As for maintenance, the Acura Precision Certified program represents the best deal, as the first scheduled maintenance comes free.

The warranties of each program vary greatly, with the coverage level correlating with the age of the vehicles they'll cover, but each comes with no deductible, full transferability, and trip interruption expense reimbursement.

Aston Martin

  • Inspection points: "Multipoint"

  • Eligible vehicles: 10 years old or less, with certain models excepted

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—one year, unlimited miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

With a name befitting the British luxury brand, Aston Martin’s CPO program, Timeless, gives buyers decent coverage, as well as numerous extras that—while a bit of a novelty—may be fun for those in the market for a luxury vehicle at a slightly more diminutive price. Aside from the one-year, fully transferable warranty unburdened by a mileage limit, owners of Timeless CPO vehicles receive a 15 percent discount on Aston Martin accessories and a one-year subscription to AM Magazine.

There are more practical benefits, too, such as zero-deductible warranty claims. Any service due within three months or 3000 miles will have already been completed, too. However, unlike many CPO programs, Timeless doesn’t automatically come with a satellite-radio trial, a free Carfax report, or a rental-car allowance. Instead, Aston leaves it up to dealers to include those benefits.

Audi

  • Inspection points: 125+

  • Eligible vehicles: 5 years old or less, under 60,000 miles

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—Two years, 50,000 miles

  • Roadside assistance: Two years

Audi's CPO program is rather average. It includes a two-year or 50,000-mile warranty.

As with most programs, a third-party vehicle-history report is complimentary, and roadside assistance is offered for two years. It is fully transferable (though the limited period of the warranty makes this less relevant), and there is no deductible for warranty-covered repairs. In the event of a problem away from home, Audi also reimburses trip-interruption expenses.

Unlike with most programs, a satellite-radio subscription is left up to the dealer's discretion.

Bentley

  • Inspection: Yes

  • Eligible vehicles: Contact your local Bentley dealer

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One year

A one-year warranty is typical of CPO vehicles in this class, and Bentley is no exception.

Purchase of a Certified by Bentley vehicle comes with a subscription to a magazine for Bentley owners, access to the Bentley Network app, a factory tour invite, and access to Bentley events.

BMW

  • Inspection points: “360°”

  • Eligible vehicles: Late-model vehicles with more than 300 miles but less than 60,000 on the odometer

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One year, unlimited miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Six years from original in-service date

While the warranty included with BMW Certified vehicles is neither spectacular nor disappointing, the program sets itself apart with some unique bonuses. Aside from a free Carfax or AutoCheck report with purchase of the vehicle, as well as a SiriusXM trial, BMW throws in a complimentary loaner car while repairs are being made.

Most unique about this warranty, though, is its roadside assistance. Whereas most brands offer roadside assistance only for the duration of the warranty, BMW covers roadside assistance for Certified vehicles until six years from the original in-service date. Combine the four-year, 50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty with the one-year CPO warranty, and it's possible your CPO Bimmer may better the roadside assistance program of a new BMW by a year.

BMW’s signature maintenance plans do not cover Certified vehicles. Still, with extra roadside assistance and extended-coverage options available, BMW Certified vehicles perhaps provide more peace of mind than other CPO luxury vehicles.

Buick

  • Inspection points: 172

  • Eligible vehicles: Six years old or less, under 75,000 miles

  • Warranty: Powertrain—Six years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date; Bumper-to-bumper—One year or 12,000 miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of powertrain warranty

Buick offers the same GM CPO program as its Chevy and GMC siblings. Besides a reasonably long warranty, the program doesn't charge deductibles. It also allows a vehicle exchange within three days or 150 miles, includes roadside assistance, courtesy transportation in the event your CPO Buick needs a repair, two complimentary maintenance visits within two years or 24,000 miles of purchase, free OnStar and SiriusXM trials, and a complimentary Carfax report. In terms of perks, few CPO programs can compare with Buick's.

Cadillac

  • Inspection points: 172

  • Eligible vehicles: Four years old or less, under 50,000 miles

  • Warranty: Bumper-to-bumper—One year, unlimited miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC all offer the same GM CPO program that leaves practically nothing on the table. It includes roadside assistance, courtesy transportation in the event your CPO vehicle needs a repair, and a free SiriusXM trial. In terms of perks, few CPO programs can compare with GM's.

Chrysler

  • CPOV inspection points: 125

  • Go CPO inspection points: 125

  • CPOV eligible vehicles: Vehicles up to 5 years old with under 75,000 miles

  • Go CPO eligible vehicles: Vehicles between 6 and 10 years old and with more than 75,000 miles and up to 120,000 miles

  • Go CPO warranty: Limited–Three months or 3000 miles from the date of sale or expiration of original warranty

  • CPOV roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

  • GO CPO roadside assistance: Limited 24-hour roadside assistance at a cost of up to $100 per occurrence

Stellantis is the umbrella company for a huge range of automotive brands, and many of those available in the U.S., such as Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, and Ram, share a CPO program. It shouldn't surprise buyers that all Stellantis CPO vehicles come with a free Carfax report, a SiriusXM trial, a transferable warranty, roadside assistance, and a rental car allowance for use during service and maintenance. Lesser coverage for higher-mileage vehicles is available under the CPO Go banner and includes a three-year or 3000-mile limited warranty and roadside assistance at a cost of up to $100 per occurrence.

Regardless, both coverages require a deductible for repairs. We think Chrysler's CPO programs leave a lot to be desired.

Ferrari

  • Inspection points: 101

  • Eligible vehicles: 14 years old or less

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One year

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Ferrari Approved certifies vehicles up to 14 years old, making it the furthest-reaching CPO program available in the U.S. The length and extensiveness of its coverage options are arguably its biggest draw. In addition to the one-year, unlimited CPO warranty offered in the U.S., Ferrari Approved's warranty can be extended up to 15 years from the original in-service date. Every type of Ferrari CPO warranty includes roadside assistance and no deductibles. While the CPO warranty is priced separately from the vehicle, the cost is not unreasonable given the special nature of the Italian brand's vehicles.

In addition to the warranty, Ferrari Approved vehicles retain the original Genuine Maintenance plan from the vehicle's first purchase. The plan includes seven years of complimentary scheduled maintenance from the original in-service date, so Ferrari Approved vehicles under seven years old will still have complimentary maintenance left. Like the warranty, the maintenance plan is also extendable at an extra cost, and both follow the vehicle, not the owner.

Ferrari Approved vehicles also come with trip-interruption reimbursement and a third-party vehicle-history report.

  • Ford Blue Certified Eligible vehicles: 10 years old or less, under 150,000 miles

  • Ford EV Certified Eligible vehicles: Six years old or less, under 80,000 miles

  • Ford EV Certified warranty: Comprehensive—one year or 12,000 miles; Powertrain—Eight years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Ford's two Blue Advantage tiers are part of an exchange program that lets buyers return their vehicle for a refund within 14 days or 1000 miles of purchase, whichever comes first. The warranties are transferable and offer roadside service for the duration of the warranty, trip-interruption expense reimbursement, a three-month SiriusXM trial, and a free Carfax report.

However, Gold Certified vehicles are generally younger and held to a higher standard. As such, these vehicles come with a much longer warranty. Both programs are decent, though they require a deductible for repairs.

The brand also has a separate EV-specific certified program that largely mirrors the Gold program, but includes fewer inspection points and slight differences to the length of coverage.

  • Roadside assistance: 10 years, unlimited miles from original in-service date

Genesis's CPO warranty is among the lengthiest available. Complete with rental car and travel reimbursement, a satellite-radio trial, and a free Carfax report, Genesis's CPO program is a tough act to follow.

Genesis throws in three years of complimentary Connected Services to sweeten the deal, too. One drawback, however, is that Genesis's CPO program requires a deductible for warranty-covered repairs.

As for maintenance, both Honda's Certified+ and Certified programs come with two free oil changes within the first year of ownership, while the Used program comes with one free oil change.

Infiniti offers three tiers of CPO programs to choose from. The top-line Infiniti Certified Pre-Owned program is the one to get, as it offers the most comprehensive coverage. Jaguar

  • Inspection points: 165

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One year, unlimited miles additional or two years additional, or 100,000 miles total

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Jaguar’s CPO program is typical of brands in its class, with a warranty that extends the new-vehicle warranty by some time and offers extras such as a free third-party vehicle report and roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty. The program also has no deductibles for repairs and allows for the transfer of its warranty.

The warranty is wrapped in some slightly confusing language, with the fine print saying, “Vehicles can have either a one year/unlimited miles or two years/100,000 miles limited warranty coverage.” So, if you decide to buy a Jaguar CPO vehicle, make sure to check the exact terms of the warranty with the dealer. Regardless, given Jaguar’s new-vehicle warranty of five years or 60,000 miles, the CPO warranty should give decent coverage starting at the original in-service date.

Lexus

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Lexus's CPO program, which goes by the lavish name L/Certified, offers some of the best value for its class. It includes a Carfax report and doesn't charge a deductible for warranty-covered repairs, and covers some degree of travel expenses as part of the roadside assistance package.

  • Eligible vehicles: Under 60,000 miles

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—Six years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Lincoln's CPO program lets buyers return their vehicle for a refund within 14 days or 1000 miles of purchase, whichever comes first. The warranty is transferable and offers roadside service for its duration, trip-interruption expense reimbursement, a three-month SiriusXM trial, and a free Carfax report.

Additionally, a complimentary car wash and rental car after repair services and the option to extend coverage are available. Lincoln CPO vehicles do not come with an exchange program. They are also subject to a deductible, which may be disappointing for some buyers.

Mazda

  • Inspection points: 160

  • Eligible vehicles: Six years old or less, under 80,000 miles

  • Warranty: Powertrain—Seven years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date; Bumper-to-bumper—One year or 12,000 miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of powertrain warranty

Mazda’s CPO program is very standard, offering long powertrain coverage and shorter bumper-to-bumper coverage on decently used vehicles. A free AutoCheck report and a three-month SiriusXM trial are included, and roadside assistance is available for the duration of the powertrain warranty.

Besides the $0 repair deductible, which is a plus, an unfortunate thing about this program is there is no rental car or trip-interruption reimbursement. This could be a turnoff for some, as expenses could get, well, expensive if something goes wrong away from home. While that may not be a huge concern for buyers who will mostly stay close to home, it's something to keep in mind as you shop CPO vehicles.

McLaren

  • Inspection points: Multiple

  • Eligible vehicles: Recent model year, low mileage, 3-mm tire tread

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One year, unlimited miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

As far as exotic brands go, McLaren offers a robust CPO program. While there are no hard and fast age or mileage standards, buyers of a CPO McLaren can be assured that it's a recent model year vehicle with low mileage and—as sports-car enthusiasts are surely concerned about—there's a minimum of three millimeters of tire tread left. In addition, CPO McLarens are sold with all services due within three months completed. The only catch is Ultimate Series vehicles are not within the bounds of the program.

The one-year, unlimited warranty is standard for this sphere of programs with its transferability, roadside assistance, and lack of deductibles, but for added assurance, it also specifies coverage of trip-interruption expenses. Buyers can also extend coverage past one year.

Mercedes

  • Inspection points: 165

  • Eligible vehicles: Six years old or less, under 75,000 miles

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One year, unlimited miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Mercedes's CPO program has all the bells and whistles buyers expect from a luxury brand, but its exchange program makes it stand out. The warranty itself is a straightforward one-year, unlimited-mile warranty that comes with no deductibles, full transferability, trip-interruption expense reimbursement, and roadside assistance, with a two-year extension available, as well. Additionally, Mercedes throws in the typical goodies of a free Carfax report and three months of SiriusXM

However, Mercedes is one of few brands that allows buyers to exchange their vehicle for another after purchase. Within seven days or 500 miles, should you be unsatisfied with your CPO Mercedes, you can exchange it for another CPO vehicle or a new vehicle of equal or greater value. If flexibility is what you're after, this program could be the way to go.

Mini

  • Inspection points: More than 50

  • Eligible vehicles: Five years old or less, under 60,000 miles

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One year, unlimited miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

There aren't many frills to Mini's CPO program, and the warranty coverage is adequate but not great. Every Mini CPO vehicle comes with a one-year, unlimited-mile warranty, including roadside assistance and transferability.

Mini doesn't mention any rental car or travel reimbursement. Mini also requires a repair deductible, and though repair deductibles aren't particularly uncommon, that could be frustrating for buyers.

Otherwise, the only perks offered are a free third-party vehicle-history report and a three-month SiriusXM trial. For those who specifically want a Mini, this program is certainly better than nothing, but there are better options out there for other vehicles.

Mitsubishi

  • Inspection points: 123

  • Eligible vehicles: Five years old or less, under 60,000 miles

  • Warranty: Powertrain—10 years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date; Bumper-to-bumper—Five years or 60,000 from original in-service date, plus seven years or 100,000 miles of anti-corrosion/perforation coverage

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty*

Mitsubishi's CPO-specific warranty covers only the powertrain, though for an admirable 10 years or 100,000 miles. However, the vehicles are still covered by the original new-vehicle warranty of five years or 60,000 miles, as well as the original anti-corrosion/perforation warranty of seven years or 100,000 miles, both of which are competitive with the CPO coverage offered by other brands. There is also no deductible for warranty-covered repairs, and each vehicle comes with a third-party vehicle-history report and a three-month Sirius XM trial.

*Roadside assistance for CPO Mitsubishis is covered by the original new-vehicle warranty, but for powertrain-related concerns, CPO Mitsubishi owners can get roadside assistance for the duration of the CPO powertrain warranty.

Nissan

  • Nissan Certified inspection points: 167

  • Certified Select inspection points: 84

  • Nissan Certified eligible vehicles: Six years old or less, under 80,000 miles

  • Certified Select eligible vehicles: 10 years old or less, under 100,000 miles

Nissan splits its CPO program into two. The Nissan Certified program covers newer lower mileage vehicles, while the Certified Select program offers a far shorter warranty and covers older Nissan models. Both include a three-month SiriusXM trial, warranty transferability, roadside assistance, transportation reimbursement, and a required deductible for warranty-covered repairs.

Polestar

  • Inspection points: “Global standard ... fully checked by Polestar technicians”

  • Eligible vehicles: No limits

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—Two years, unlimited additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Those in the market for one of Polestar's growing lineup of vehicles have the option to save a bit of coin by going the pre-owned route. Polestar makes this enticing by tacking on two additional warranty years to CPO models' new-vehicle warranty, including roadside assistance.

While information on the program is vague and limited to an FAQ subsection, interested buyers can find pre-owned Polestars at their nearest "space," the Polestar equivalent of a dealer. And though pre-owned Polestars don't come with the same guarantees and window dressings as those of juggernaut automotive brands, the security of the additional pre-owned warranty is a great option for someone's first foray into the battery-electric vehicle—or in the case of the Polestar 1, the plug-in hybrid—space.

Porsche

  • Inspection points: 111

  • Eligible vehicles: 13 years old or less, under 124,000 miles

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—Two years, unlimited additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

It's a common claim that more than 70 percent of Porsches ever produced are still on the road today. While vehicles as old as the brand itself aren't covered by Porsche Approved, the brand's CPO program, it's still fitting that Porsche's CPO program can apply to models from as far back as 13 years ago.

Every Porsche Approved vehicle comes with an additional two-year CPO warranty that can be extended by an extra year, and as is standard, owners are afforded roadside assistance through the duration of the warranty. Perks are limited to $0 repair deductibles, full transferability of the CPO warranty, and a three-month trial of SiriusXM, but two years or more of warranty coverage on a timeless vehicle is still a pretty good deal.

We think Ram's CPO programs leave a lot to be desired.

Rolls-Royce

  • Inspection points: "360°"

  • Eligible vehicles: No limits

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—One or two years, unlimited additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Rolls-Royce Provenance, the British brand's CPO program, proves to be one of the better options in the ultraluxury segment. The program sets no limits on which Rolls-Royce models are eligible for certification and offers one- and two-year, unlimited, all-inclusive warranties, either of which kicks in after the end of the new-vehicle warranty.

The CPO warranty includes basics such as transferability and roadside assistance, as well as no deductibles. Better yet, it also comes with complimentary service. Buyers of CPO Rolls-Royces are also afforded Whispers access, a special app that keeps owners informed about the latest Rolls-Royce-related news, events, and other more.

Subaru

  • Inspection points: 152

  • Eligible vehicles: Five years old or less

  • Warranty: Powertrain—Seven years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

There's a lot to like about Subaru's CPO program. The seven-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, however, extends a CPO Subaru's new-vehicle powertrain warranty by two years or 40,000 miles. It's transferable, includes roadside assistance, and doesn't require a deductible for repairs.

Aside from the warranty, which can be as good as any in the industry if you're willing to dig a little deeper into your wallet, CPO Subarus come with a $500 loyalty coupon that can be applied to your next Subaru—either new or pre-owned. In addition, CPO owners get a one-year trial to Starlink, a suite of connected services that can be accessed via an app, as well as the usual Carfax report and SiriusXM trial. Whether that's enough to overcome the lack of built-in bumper-to-bumper coverage is up to the buyer.

Tesla

  • Inspection points: 145

  • Eligible vehicles: No limits

  • Warranty: Bumper-to-bumper—One year or 10,000 miles additional

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

While Tesla doesn't officially call its protocol for selling used vehicles a CPO program, the company's system functions almost exactly the same as one. Buyers can be assured of the quality of the vehicle through an inspection process, get an additional warranty, and have access to roadside assistance. The warranty itself covers most bumper-to-bumper components and kicks in after the original new-vehicle warranty.

Buyers of a used Tesla, or any used EV for that matter, should be aware that certain used vehicles are now eligible for the federal EV tax rebate.

Toyota

  • Inspection points: 160

  • Eligible vehicles: Six years old or less, under 85,000 miles

  • Warranty: Powertrain—Seven years or 100,000 miles from original in-service date (eight years or 100,000 miles for hybrid-related components); Bumper-to-bumper—One year or 12,000 miles from purchase

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of powertrain warranty

Toyota's CPO program includes a Carfax report and SiriusXM trial, doesn't charge a deductible for warranty-covered repairs, and covers some degree of travel expenses as part of its roadside-assistance program.

Beyond that, Toyota doesn't include much else, with its primary selling point being its warranty. Toyota's powertrain warranty is standard for this class of vehicles, and the inclusion of hybrid-related components is nice, but the bumper-to-bumper coverage is on the short side since it begins at the date of purchase and doesn't include the balance of the original new-vehicle warranty.

Volkswagen

  • Inspection points: "100+"

  • Eligible vehicles: Six years old or less, under 75,000 miles

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—Two years or 24,000 miles additional (one year or 12,000 miles for model years 2018–2019)

  • Roadside assistance: Two years additional

Volkswagen's CPO program has the quirk of basing the warranty on the model year, with every model year covered receiving two years or 24,000 miles of additional coverage, except model years 2018 and 2019—those vehicles are covered for half that length (one year or 12,000 miles).

Meanwhile, roadside assistance is covered for a blanket two years from the expiration of the original new-vehicle warranty or purchase date, whichever is longer.

While buyers receive a free Carfax report and SiriusXM trial, as well as trip-expense reimbursement, repairs for warranty claims require a deductible.

Volvo

  • Inspection points: 170

  • Eligible vehicles: Five years or less, under 80,000 miles

  • Warranty: Comprehensive—Five years, unlimited from original in-service date

  • Roadside assistance: Duration of warranty

Vehicles that are Certified by Volvo feature an ordinary CPO benefits package, with five years of coverage, a Carfax report and SiriusXM trial, warranty transferability, and trip-expense and rental-car reimbursement.

While the included warranty coverage isn't very long considering the age of the vehicles Certified by Volvo covers, the warranty can be upgraded to up to 10 years of coverage with no mileage limitations.

In addition, there are no deductibles for repairs, and each CPO Volvo comes with a one-year subscription to the Volvo Cars app of connected services. Though Certified by Volvo is nothing special when it comes to CPO programs, it offers respectable extras and decent to great coverage depending on upgrades.
