Qualifying for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick+ award is no small feat. For 2024, vehicles must perform well in both overlap and side crash tests, have strong headlights, and come included with good-performing pedestrian impact prevention tech. Out of the hundreds of vehicles currently on sale, only 17 SUVs were awarded the IIHS's Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick+ award this year. Here they are, ranked from cheapest to most expensive.

2024 Mazda CX-30

Price: $26,415

The CX-30 is based on the Mazda 3 and is the smallest SUV Mazda sells. It earned flawless scores on the IIHS' tests, including for headlights and LATCH anchors.

2025 Honda HR-V

Price: $26,450

The bite-size Honda HR-V was awarded overwhelmingly positive results by the IIHS, save for the LATCH child restraint ease of use and the headlights, which both got scores of Acceptable.

You may be wondering what the difference is between the CX-50 and the similarly sized CX-5, but the IIHS found one crucial difference: the CX-50 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating while the CX-5 is only rated as Top Safety Pick.

The Kia Telluride is arguably the best SUV on sale right now, and its IIHS safety ratings only bolster that claim. It scored well in every single category.

Mazda's new upmarket CX-90 three-row SUV scored well in virtually every part of the IIHS's slew of tests. Its only fault is that depending on trim, you can get an Acceptable-rated headlight system. On the plug-in hybrid, Acceptable was the only rating given for the headlights.

Price: $41,350

The Explorer is getting tweaked for 2025, and we expect it to earn the same TSP+ rating as the 2024 model. That version had Good ratings in all crash test categories.

The electric Ioniq 5 SUV scored well across the board, with Good ratings for all its crash tests. But you should know that only the Limited trim earned a Good rating for its headlights, with the less expensive SE and SEL trims' headlights earning an Acceptable rating.

When it comes to the IIHS crash tests, pedestrian impact avoidance tech, and headlights, the X3 is perfect. The only place where it can improve, according to the IIHS, is in seat belt reminders and the LATCH ease of use, where it scored Marginal ratings.
