Check Out Volvo’s Teaser of the ES90 Battery-Electric Sedan
The Volvo ES90 follows the same naming convention as legacy and battery-electric Volvo cars.
This ES90 is expected to be the company’s flagship sedan.
The ES90 will sit atop Volvo’s car hierarchy next to its likely platform mate the EX90.
Volvo showed off the next feather in its battery-electric cap at the end of the livestream revealing the refreshed XC90. At the end of that presentation, the company rolled out a video teasing the ES90 and formally introduced its battery-electric sedan.
While Volvo didn’t say anything about the upcoming ES90, it’s safe to assume that the company will stick with its established alphanumeric naming conventions. Considering that the crossover side of its battery-electric efforts is doing exactly that, we can safely guess that the ES90 will be a big sedan—just like the Volvo S90.
This should be good news for Volvo sedan shoppers, but it might be bad news for internal combustion enthusiasts. While Volvo’s CEO Jim Rowan did soften the company’s ambitious electric plan in the same presentation, the decline in traditional sedan sales might force Volvo to make a choice for the sedan side of its lineup in the future.
Of course, that’s only speculation. It wouldn’t be totally out of the question for Volvo to give another update to its aging S90—like the company just has with its XC90 crossover. The S90 first hit the road in 2016, so there may yet be another round of updates for the sedan.
Regardless of the S90’s fate, you can almost expect that the ES90 will feature a lot of the same hardware and specs as its EX90 crossover counterpart. The 111-kWh battery pack and standard all-wheel-drive layout will likely underpin the upcoming ES90. However, we won't know for certain what is heading the ES90's way until Volvo shows off the rest of this upcoming sedan.
