Chevy Colorado Owners Can Get ZR2 Engine Tune for Just $395 at Dealer
General Motors is giving Chevrolet Colorado buyers an affordable power bump. Non-ZR2 model truck buyers with the appropriate engine option will be able to spec the range-topping ZR2 powertrain tune for $395 at the dealer.
Every 2023 Chevrolet Colorado (and GMC Canyon) model is powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In Chevy's entry-level WT and LT trims, that engine is known as the L2R. The base motor is good for 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the Z71 or Trail Boss models and the more potent LB3 engine variant comes as standard. Chevy refers to this powertrain as the Turbo Plus, providing 310 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque to the midsizer. The Turbo High-Output variant of the LB3 is exclusively offered in the ZR2 and provides 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.
Chevrolet will allow WT and LT customers to spec the more powerful LB3 engine as an option for $1,185. This package also brings the newer 8L80 automatic transmission, as opposed to the 8L45 attached to every L2R engine. As GM Authority first reported in December 2022, once you’ve specced the LB3 motor, you will have the chance to purchase the Turbo High-Output tune for just $395. That means you can have a 310 hp and 430 lb-ft engine in your truck for less than $32,000. Not bad gains for just $1580.
While the L2R and LB3 engines are virtually identical, the base motor lacks the oil squirters needed to safely provide ZR2-levels of output. While that’s not to say you couldn’t tune the L2R in the aftermarket with similar results, this package is obviously backed by a factory warranty. That brings some added peace of mind that many truck customers need when it comes to their machines.
