A Closer Look At the Mazda Iconic SP Concept In All Of Its FD RX-7-eqsue Glory

Mazda just revealed its shiny new Iconic SP concept sports car at the Japan Mobility Show, and my goodness is it a good-looking little car with styling that pulls heavily from the third-generation FD Mazda RX-7.

What makes this car interesting is more than skin deep, though. Under the hood is a twin-rotor hybrid powerplant that puts out a Mazda-claimed 364 horsepower through an automatic transmission. It’s a pretty good number for a vehicle that weighs 3,200 pounds. Right now, we don’t know much else performance-wise. Hell, we don’t even know what the drive wheels will end up being, but that’s alright. We’re still a while away from this car hitting anything resembling a production version.

There’s so much beautiful stuff about this car that you probably will overlook how good-looking the wheels are on this thing. Before you go any further, take a look at those bad boys, because they’re both simple and gorgeous.

A Ferrari For You And Me

The Iconic SP looks a little bit like a Ferrari Roma, doesn’t it? I’d actually hazard to say it looks better than a Roma, and it’s going to cost a whole lot less, too (in theory).

Keeping It Simple

The Iconic SP is going with a simpler and cleaner look inside. It’s a refreshing change from the screen-dominated cars we’re used to seeing these days.

Swan doors might quietly be the coolest type of door-opening operation. It stands out, but it’s also subtle enough you won’t get called corny for trying to be like a Lamborghini.

Remember Your Elders

There’s a whole lot of FD RX-7 back here, and that’s amazing. I also don’t think you’d be too far off if you said there was a little bit of Lancia Stratos in the rear.

Surprise!

What could this be? I’ve got no idea.

What’s On The Inside?

While it’s definitely a concept car, the interior of the Iconic SP doesn’t look as outlandish as a lot of concept car interiors. Also, more cars should be blue on the inside. It would make the world better.

Yeah, That’s An RX-7

It’s the car you’ve all been asking for, a modernized FD RX-7 with a rotary engine. If Mazda decides to put it on sale, you all better be there to buy one.

Auto

Yeah, I know. The Iconic SP has some sort of automatic transmission. It’s a hybrid, what did you expect? This is the world we live in, baby.

Door Jamming

That is the exact door shape as the FD RX-7's. God bless you, Mazda. It knows everyone loves nostalgia for the recent-ish past, and it gave that to us.

Just Look At It

There’s an argument to be made that if this was on sale, it would be the best-looking vehicle you could buy. I would make that argument, and if you disagree, I will not listen.

I Need More

Hello, Mazda. Please put this car into production, and then let me have one. I would really appreciate it. Thanks, bestie!

Pop Up

We all deserve the return of pop-up headlights, even if we don’t need them. They really just tie the whole thing together, don’t they?
