Normally we appreciate the work law enforcement does. Sure, there are some bad cops and even the good ones get things wrong sometimes, but overall we appreciate the work they do. However, there are moments when officers do just boneheaded stuff, like this one in Massachusetts who forgot to put his cruiser in park before hopping out to break up a fight.

Did this Florida trooper screw up?

After all, cops get out and back into their vehicle constantly. Putting it into park should be seared into every officer’s muscle memory. Yet this one apparently forgot to do that very necessary thing when he saw two vagrants going at it.

It’s one thing to forget to put your vehicle into park, and it’s another to try stopping it by leaning up against the push bar as it creeps forward. But that’s exactly what the officer does in the video. Does the guy think he’s Superman?

Or did he do that to prevent damage to the car it ran into? His body did cushion the blow, but we don’t recommend treating oneself that way.

Why didn’t the cop just open up the cruiser and put on the brakes or shift it to park? The New York Post says the door locked, so he couldn’t get inside. That’s probably why the guy panicked. Imagine if the cruiser had rolled away, caught speed, then hit another vehicle hard, causing a big accident.

Instead, the officer puts himself in harm’s way to stop his own car from doing any damage. While it seems silly or even funny, we guess in a way he’s protecting and serving the community. And that, in a way, is admirable. We just hope the guy’s okay, which he reportedly is.
