Did Angelina Jolie Own This Ferrari 250 GT? It's Unclear
A 1958 Ferrari 250 GT that is reportedly owned by Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie was to be one of the highlights at Christie’s “The Exceptional Sale” in Paris, France next month. At least, that was the plan. However, according to a report by Bloomberg, questions about the car's ownership history have caused Christie’s to pull the car from the auction.
In early October, it was announced that a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT — chassis number 0953 GT — was going to be offered at the Paris auction. The car is the 11th of just 353 examples built, and the rarity, combined with the celebrity ownership, led the auction house to place a pre-auction estimate of $660,000–$880,000 on the car.
However, questions began to arise about the Jolie connection almost immediately after the announcement. Some members of the well-connected online Ferrari community FerrariChat pointed out that this car was used in a Guerlain fragrances promotional video with Jolie behind the wheell however, just because she drove the car in the commercial did not mean she actually owns the car. (Christie’s has not confirmed that the car they were offering for sale was the same used in the commercial)
The ownership history of the car is well-established — at least, until 2015, when it was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s and sold for €580,000. A few years later, the car was listed for sale at Copley Motorcars of Boston for $895,000; Barchetta.cc, a well-known historical reference site for Ferrari cars, still lists Copley Motorcars as the most recent owner. Christie’s has been unable to provide any formal documentation that proves the ownership link between Jolie and 0953 GT.
In a statement emailed to Bloomberg, Edward Lewine, a Christie’s spokesperson said: “At the request of Ms. Jolie’s team, Christie’s will not offer this lot at auction in November, to better position the lot for future sale.” The webpage that previously announced the sale of this Ferrari and the connection to Jolie has been removed, but it's still visible online via The Wayback Machine.
A 1958 Ferrari 250 GT is a beautiful work of art and a piece of Ferrari history, no matter who owns it or has owned it in the past. However, before this particular example is offered for sale again, the questions around its ownership need to be definitively answered.
