You can always count on French automakers to cook up a wild design. The latest quirky machine comes from DS Automobiles, the luxury offshoot of Citroen that launched in 2014 and currently sits under the Stellantis umbrella. The DS SM Tribute pays homage to the Citroen SM, a revered luxury coupe from the 1970s that made waves with aerodynamic styling and a hydropneumatic suspension that made it one of the comfiest cars of its day.
The DS SM Tribute echoes the original SM with its dramatic bodywork, featuring a long hood and a tapered rear end. The SM Tribute measures 194.5 inches long, roughly the length of a new Mercedes-Benz E-class, but it sits about five inches lower. The original SM had an unusual front-end design, which eschewed a traditional upper grille for a glass enclosure between the headlights that housed the license plate. DS emulated that look with the concept using a glass section illuminated by a three-dimensional screen.
The headlights and blacked-out fascia below are framed by thin LED strips that form an angular three-pointed star that accentuates the SM Tribute's pointy front end. The two-door cabin features a black roof that peeks through the rear quarter panel to give the rear pillar a floating look.
DS also incorporated the original SM's wheel fairings in a more modern rendition, exposing the top of the 22-inch wheels and integrating part of the thin LED taillights. The two-tone look with Gold Leaf paint in a satin finish highlights the SM Tribute's elegant lines.
The cabin is equally stunning, with a futuristic screen spanning the width of the dashboard and a supplemental screen that swoops down the center console. The steering wheel has an unusual rectangular shape with its own screen inside. The ivory-colored leather and Alcantara give the SM Tribute's cabin an airy feel, and the doors feature an ornate sun-like laser engraving.
DS didn't mention any details regarding a powertrain, but given that it's 2024 and the front end looks to have minimal grille openings, we guess the concept is powered by electricity. The DS SM Tribute isn't likely to reach production in this form, but DS says that the car will inform "the shape of future models that will come along at the end of the decade."
