Extreme E Racing Series Suspends Operations, No Race for Phoenix
We may have seen the last of the Extreme E all-electric SUV racing series.
On Friday, it was announced that the final two races of the 2024 season will not be happening. In fact, the Extreme E website has deleted its 2024 race calendar. And at least one team is saying that it has been informed races scheduled for Sardinia on Sept. 21-22 and Phoenix on Nov. 23-24 have been cancelled.
Extreme E is an FIA-sanctioned series that began racing in 2021. Teams race spec electric SUVs. The series has seven teams competing in 2024. Ownership groups include established racers and racing names such as Michael Andretti, McLaren, Nico Rosberg, Jimmie Johnson and Carlos Sainz.
Here's a release Friday from the NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team:
The NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team has been informed that the current season of the Extreme E Championship – Season 4 – will not be proceeding as planned. The decision to amend the current Extreme E season means planned races in Sardinia and Phoenix will no longer go ahead, and the series is currently reviewing alternatives for these events.
This is disappointing news as the team was looking forward to getting back on track soon, challenging for podiums and wins and delivering great moments for our fans and partners.
Extreme E has always provided McLaren Racing a perfect platform to push the sport forward with its unique gender-equal driver pairing format, and its environmental focus.
We will await further information and updates from Extreme E.
It's has already been reported that Extreme E is ending after the current season and will become Extreme H—an all-hydrogen powered racing series.
