Ferrari LaFerrari Spider: Here it Is

From Road & Track

Ferrari's been hinting at it since the spring. It was confirmed on Top Gear, by now-departed host Chris Evans, and made official by Sergio Marchionne. Gordon Ramsay apparently already has his. Here it is, officially and in full topless glory: The LaFerrari Spider.

Interested customers were approached about the LaFerrari Spider long before the news was made public. Like the hardtop LaFerrari, customers don't just purchase a Spider-they are invited by Ferrari to do so. When Marchionne spilled the beans about the droptop LaFerrari, he mentioned that potential owners had already been approached.

And it's here. We don't know any details about the vehicle, but we assume it's got the same 949-horsepower hybrid drivetrain, composed of a 788-hp 6.3-liter naturally-aspirated V12 and a 161-horse electric motor nestled inside the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In our testing, that combo was good for 0-60 in just 2.4 seconds, faster than any car we've ever tested before. Ferrari hasn't revealed how many (or more accurately, how few) Spiders will be built, nor how much it will cost, but considering Ferrari only built 499 examples of the coupe, it'll be a pretty limited run.

So, as far as hybrid hypercars go, we've got the Porsche 918 Spyder and now the LaFerrari providing roofless fun. Maybe McLaren will step up with a drop-top P1?

As for the name? It might not be called the Spider. Ferrari won't tell us for certain until the Paris auto show.
