When Ferrari revealed the Roma back in 2019, the turbocharged V-8 grand tourer had everything the segment needed but a convertible option. That role was instead filled by the less powerful Portofino for years, but Ferrari has finally added a retractable top to the Roma to build this, the Roma Spider.

Like the original Roma, the Spider is headlined by a front-mounted, twin-turbo V-8 that produces 612 hp. That engine is paired with Ferrari's F1 8-speed DCT

The car itself is still what Ferrari calls a "2+," which is the company's way of saying the car's rear seats are even less useful than a traditional 2+2. The added retractable roof is a soft top, a departure from the company's long-standing commitment to hard-top convertibles and the first front-engined Ferrari designed to run with a soft top since 1969. Despite the switch, Ferrari says the soft top produces "acoustic comfort on par with retractable hard tops." The company also notes that it can be opened in just under 14 seconds.

Given what the Roma already does well, a Spider variant is a logical evolution. The Roma is notable as Ferrari's most usable every-day car, but it also stands out on its own as an elegant grand tourer that prioritizes form over function in a way the company's mid-engined cars have not been able to over the past few decades. The convertible top, something that adds to the driving experience as a compromise with outright performance, will pair perfectly.

It is not currently clear if the Roma Spider is meant as a successor to the Portofino or if it will be offered alongside the existing hard top convertible. Road & Track has reached out to the brand for clarification.
