The Ferrari 458 - offered as a sports coupe (458 Italia) and drop-dead gorgeous roadster (458 Spider) - continues to banish memories of its F430 predecessor. The 4.5-liter V-8 (capable of ripping to a titillating 9000 rpm) is the brand's first direct-injected powerplant in a mid-engine application, and is rated for 562 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. A quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (the only transmission for these two models) is linked to an entire suite of go-fast electronic driving aids, including F1-Trac, E-Diff, and high-performance ABS. Claimed top speed is in excess of 202 mph. Boasting sublime Pininfarina bodywork and unmistakable triple exhaust tips, the 458s also benefit from technical lessons gleaned from Ferrari's racing activities, particularly from the aerodynamics department. Speaking of aero, the engineers at Maranello paid masterful attention to the slightly heavier, hardtop-wearing 458 Spider. Not content with merely changing the roof, the roadster has strengthened buttresses (which are instrumental in rollover protection) and a unique engine cover. It takes 14 seconds for the aluminum roof to stow itself out of view. And representing several thousand dollars worth in value, the 458s are covered by Ferrari's complimentary scheduled maintenance program, good for 7 years and transferrable between owners. See more...
