First-Ever Ford Expedition Tremor Has Chunky Tires and Raptor Parts
The 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor is a new off-road-focused trim that was previously reserved for Ford's pickup trucks.
The rugged full-size SUV features LED lights in the grille, a front bash plate from the F-150 Raptor, and knobby 33-inch all-terrain tires.
As with the rest of the redesigned Expedition lineup, the Tremor has a 24.0-inch dash-mounted display and a split-folding liftgate.
All large families aren't created equal. While they can all benefit from the space and utility provided by a full-size three-row SUV such as the Ford Expedition, some will prefer an adventure in the great outdoors over a trip to Disney World. For those who find the former more appealing, Ford has introduced an off-the-grid version of the redesigned Expedition called the Tremor.
Tremor Replaces Timberline
The 2025 model year marks the first time the Tremor moniker has been used on a Ford without a cargo bed. Previously, the Expedition (as well as the Explorer) was available in Timberline guise, which included 33-inch all-terrain tires and bits from the beefy F-150 Raptor. The new Expedition Tremor offers much of the same equipment as its predecessor, albeit with a different name.
The Tremor's underbelly is protected by skid plates that cover its transfer case and fuel tank. There's also a front bash plate that's similar to the Raptor's heavy-duty chin guard. Ford says it retuned the suspension and steering to better fit the Tremor's character, and it also gave it the same wheels and tires as the F-150 equivalent. The burliest Expedition now rolls on a set of knobby 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires that are slightly taller than the Timberline's Goodyear Wrangler set. The new rubber is mounted on 18-inch wheels that have an orange pocket to help identify the valve stem.
Other Tremor touches include LED lights integrated into the revised grille, which has wing-like daytime running lights that enhance its already wide appearance. The bumper has orange-painted tow hooks, with the bright color also popping in the area surrounding the front fog lights. A pair of sturdy side steps are part of the Raptor influence. They make it easier to climb aboard the Tremor, which has a higher ride height than its siblings and boasts 10.6 inches of ground clearance.
A Whole New Dashboard
Inside, the Expedition has a totally new dashboard with a 24.0-inch screen mounted on top and a touchscreen located in the center. The infotainment system is called the Ford Digital Experience and uses Google-based software, meaning its myriad apps are accessible along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Tremor is available with short and long wheelbases, which each accommodate three rows of seats. Second-row passengers can clamp their small devices to new front-headrest-mounted holders, and the new power-sliding center console can move about eight inches back for easier access to the HVAC controls and charging ports. People in the front can then store personal items in the vacant space. As with the rest of the Expedition lineup, the Tremor has a split-folding liftgate that can double as a bench, and its backmost row of seats now has a 40/20/40 configuration to help with transporting the longest of items.
The Tremor variant comes standard with the high-output twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, which churns out 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The H/O engine is otherwise only available on the Expedition's top-most trim, the Platinum. Along with a 10-speed automatic and standard four-wheel drive, the Tremor has an electronically locking rear differential. It also has exclusive drive settings, including Rock Crawl mode and trail-tackling aids such as a one-pedal feature for conquering low-speed obstacles and Trail Turn Assist for maximizing maneuverability in tight spaces.
Ford hasn't said how much the 2025 Expedition Tremor will cost, but it'll likely be more expensive than the outgoing Timberline, which started at nearly $74K. Order books open later this month on October 28, and the Expedition lineup is slated to reach dealerships next spring.
