At this point the name Takata is about as closely related to safety catastrophe as the Pinto was back in the late 70s. In fact, that case from way back is in part why Ford and other automakers err on the side of caution these days. That’s why a new Do Not Drive advisory has been issued by the Blue Oval for millions of Mustangs, Rangers, GT supercars, and more.

Ford has recalled Mustangs for a separate reason.

We should make it clear this isn’t a new recall but instead is Ford reminding people who haven’t had their already recalled vehicles outfitted with Takata airbags to stop driving them until the recall work has been completed. After all, it’s free and could save your life.

It seems like another Takata airbag recall story comes out every few months if not weeks, so at this point everyone might be a little desensitized to the danger. Just remember, several years ago one of the victims of the airbag inflator shrapnel was mistaken for a stabbing victim by first responders. This isn’t something we would take lightly.

Others have died because of Takata airbags, like a 23-year-old driving a Ford Ranger not two years ago.

Ford has issued the Do Not Drive advisory for all 2005-2014 Mustangs, 2005-2006 GT supercars, 2004-2011 Rangers, 2007-2010 Edges, 2006-2012 Fusions, 2007-2010 Lincoln MKXs, 2006-2012 Mercury Milans, and 2006-2012 Lincoln MKZ/Zephyrs.

If you have one of the above vehicles and the airbags haven’t been replaced, it won’t cost you a thing to take your ride to a dealership for new airbags.

Anyone wondering if their car or truck is included in the airbag recall can contact their local dealership. Using the VIN it’s easy for the service department to confirm if the recall work has been performed or not, then schedule an appointment to get it done. Really, there’s no excuse to not replace your Takata airbags.
