Ford Offering EV Buyers Free Charger and Home Installation Thru 2024
Free fast charging is a common electric vehicle sales incentive, but in reality, most EV owners don’t typically charge much at public Level 3 stations. Instead, the home is where the majority of charging takes place. To better help would-be customers take advantage of that, Ford has issued a new offer that provides a free charger and home installation for new EV customers.
Starting on October 1 and lasting until January 2, 2025, Ford will provide a free charger and free “standard installation” of said charger to all new F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit Van Cargo customers. This applies to those who either lease or buy the vehicle within that time frame.
The charger you’ll receive is the Ford Charge Station Pro, which retails for $1,310. It enables bi-directional power transfer, so if your home’s electrical system is compatible, it will allow the F-150 Lightning to be used as home backup power during an outage.
We asked Ford what it deems a “standard installation,” to understand what the free installation offer does (and doesn’t) cover. Ford tells Road & Track that "a standard installation must be completed at a residential property with a dedicated electrical meter."
A spokesperson elaborated: "Charging hardware must be attached to the same structure as the main electrical panel. For customers with a non-standard installation, they can choose to cover any additional portion e.g. trenching to a detached garage."
Ford is partnering with the company Qmerit to provide install services, so be sure to look into your specific situation before assuming the entire install will be covered by Ford.
This offer is part of what Ford is calling the “Ford Power Promise,” which also includes a new 24/7 EV-specific live support service that can answer questions or provide charging assistance via text. A new “Proactive Roadside Assistance” service is also coming to F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E customers; if your car or truck runs out of charge (or any other adverse event occurs), Ford says it will bring you and your vehicle to an EV charger or the dealership to get your ride back on the road.
