If you or someone you know owns a 2022 or 2023 Ford Mustang it might need to get recall work done at a local dealership. Failure to do so could lead to a sudden loss of steering and crash, so we think this is something pony car owners should take seriously.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford is recalling certain ’22 and ’23 Mustangs for potentially improperly calibrated steering gears. The automaker has pinpointed the problem in 30,735 vehicles, although they’re not contained in a certain VIN range.

This is why owners will need to contact Ford directly at 866-436-7332 or their local dealer to check if their Mustang is included in this recall.

In the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, it says this problem can cause the steering wheel to turn one way and then the other as the driver tries to maneuver through a turn. It’s from the electronic power steering gear giving steering assist, only in the wrong way, all thanks to the secondary digital torque sensor having an inverted polarity. That’s of course bad because it might lead to a loss of control of the Mustang and a crash.

While this might be used as an example of how modern technology creates crazy problems in cars, electronic power steering does have its maintenance benefits, so it’s a bit of a double edged sword. But if you want old school hydraulic power steering, there are plenty of old Mustangs out there with that.

And while it’s annoying to deal with recalls, it’s better to sit in a dealership’s service department waiting room than to try going through a turn in the road at speed only for the steering wheel to start going haywire, jerking one way and then the other while you try fighting it for control before crashing.
