Red Bull Formula 1's junior team, Toro Rosso, will change its name to Alpha Tauri for the 2020 season to promote the clothing brand of the same name. This isn't huge news, as name changes are somewhat frequent in the sport. But it is funny news, as it means F1 will have Alpha Tauri and Alfa Romeo racing against each other. Alpha vs. Alfa. What a strange world we live in.
What's especially funny about this is that Alfa Romeo is often misspelled as "Alpha Romeo." (Occasionally you see Alpha Romero, too.) Now that there is an Alpha in F1 in addition to Alfa, we can only imagine the confusion that will ensue. Surely, this must make life harder for the sport's live commentators as well.
We've reached out to Toro Rosso to see if the team hesitated over the name change given that Alfa Romeo is on the grid. And we reached out to Alfa Romeo to see if it had comment on the name change. At the time of writing, we've yet to receive a reply from representatives for either team.
Toro Rosso placed sixth in the 2019 F1 Constructor's Championship with 85 points, while Alfa Romeo Racing finished eight with 57 points. Next year, both teams will retain their current driver lineups—Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat for Alpha, and Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi for Alfa.
