If you didn't already hear, Nico Rosberg, the 2016 Formula One Champion, announced his abrupt retirement earlier today. His unexpected exit came as a shock to the Mercedes F1 team, and everyone else in the motorsports world. That is, everyone except for his teammate, Lewis Hamilton.

Motorsport got the opportunity to speak to the three-time Champion, who apparently wasn't caught off-guard by Rosberg's announcement:

"The sport will miss him but I wish him all the best. I am sure it is a surprise to many people. I am probably the only person who thought it was not a surprise because I've known him a long time, but this is motor racing," he said.

"This is the first time he has won in 18 years, hence why it was not a surprise that he decided to stop."

Don't forget, It was just five months ago Rosberg signed a deal with the Mercedes F1 team to stay on until 2018. So unless Lewis knows something we don't, we're not sure what to make of this.

When asked about who might fill his teammate's empty spot, Hamilton replied:

"It doesn't matter who [they pick]. I'll race them, I'm here to race. Now the focus is obviously on next year and hoping for a better season," he said.

"I just always asked to have equal rights. As long we're treated fairly, it doesn't matter who is alongside you. Of course, we've got great team bosses who I'm sure will choose the right people to be representing the brand."
