While some competitors in this class have hybrid powertrains, the XF offers a fuel-efficient diesel-powered engine as an option. Its real-world fuel economy and highway range are significantly better than the lineup’s gas-fired versions. In our testing, the gas engines failed to meet the expectations set by Uncle Sam.

What’s New for 2018?

The XF’s new turbocharged four-cylinder is available with either 247 or 296 horsepower, which also means separate EPA estimates. As expected, less power means more miles per gallon, but their city and highway ratings are all within 3 mpg of each other. So far we’ve only tested the 247-hp version on our highway fuel loop. It missed the government’s prediction of 33 mpg by 2 mpg, which ranked it behind most rivals. The 380-hp supercharged V-6 and diesel engine retain their same EPA estimates for 2018, so we don’t expect their real-world fuel economy to differ.

We’ve devised our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.

The diesel XF and all its competitors matched or exceeded their EPA highway ratings. However, the 40 mpg that the 20d achieved on our test loop leads the class by 6 mpg versus the second-best BMW 530i xDrive. It can also travel hundreds of miles farther than its rivals on a single tankful.
