The GLC43's EPA ratings make it look thirsty, but it's no worse than most of the competition; performance-oriented crossovers do not prioritize fuel efficiency. Both of the GLC43 models we tested underperformed their EPA highway estimates by 1 mpg, which is not uncommon for this group. Those who desire both performance and fuel-sipping highway fuel economy should check out the Audi SQ5, which returned a surprisingly efficient 28 mpg in our real-world testing.

What’s New for 2018?

There are no changes to the GLC43 and GLC43 coupe's EPA ratings for 2018. We're not surprised: Mercedes-AMG did not alter the powertrain components or modify the aerodynamics this year.

We’ve devised our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.

We have yet to test a 2018 GLC43, but since there are no changes that would cause the EPA to change its ratings, we expect our testing would bear results similar to the 2017s we tested last year.
