Tyre Deandre Nichols, 29, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, in Memphis, three days being stopped and detained by Memphis Police. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death.

A public funeral for Tyre Nichols, the man who died after a traffic stop with officers from the Memphis Police Department, will be hosted Feb. 1 at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church.

The funeral will be open to the public and will feature a eulogy from civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton.

"The universe is working for my brother, and I love it," Keyana Dixon, Nichols' older sister, told The Commercial Appeal on Wednesday. "His light will outshine the dark way he left us."

In a written statement Tuesday, Sharpton called for charges to be filed against the five officers involved in the traffic stop.

"Firing these officers for misconduct is not enough," he said. "Justice will only be served when all five are charged with killing Tyre Nichols for the simple act of driving while Black."

The funeral is set to take place at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 1, and will be six days after a Jan. 26 candlelight vigil that will be hosted at Tobey Skatepark at 7 p.m.. A candlelight vigil and memorial will also be hosted in California on Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb. 4 at 4 p.m., respectively.

In the days since his death, Nichols has been remembered for his love of photography, skateboarding, nature, and sunsets. He has been called a free spirit by friends, and family noted how he was loved by anyone he met.

The officers involved in the traffic stop were fired by Memphis Police, which cited multiple violations of department policy. The FBI and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have launched investigations into the traffic stop and death.
