Car sickness, a particular form of the more broadly defined motion sickness, was once a rite of passage for several generations of American travelers, often triggered by the combination of nautical-like vehicular motions combined with nutritionally questionable dietary choices and the ever-present scent of raw gasoline and exhaust fumes. It wasn’t officially a family car trip until someone went green in the gills and put the contents of their stomach on display for the whole gang to enjoy. Thankfully, cars in general are vastly refined and cleaner-burning than the nausea-inducing land yachts of yesteryear, but genuine motion sickness, the type initiated by conflicts among human sensory systems, still afflicts an estimated one-third of travelers at some point in their lives. To alleviate the condition, French automaker Citroën has come up with these special, stylish glasses.

Utilizing patented Boarding Ring technology developed by the French organization of the same name, Citroën’s phonetically similar Seetroën glasses use moving liquid in the four rings-right/left and front/back-to re-create the horizon. The effect, which has tested up to 95 percent effective, takes 10 to 12 minutes to enable the mind to resynchronize with the movement perceived by the inner ear, while the eyes are focused on an immobile object such as a smartphone or a book.

More than just another medical device, Seetroën glasses offer all the trademark French artistic distinction that you’d expect from the inventors of the DS21 and the 2CV. Designed at Paris-based design studio 5.5, the glasses have a high-tech look rendered in soft-touch plastic. They’re bound to be a hit with certain populations, regardless of motion sickness, so don’t be surprised when you see them during fashion week.

Seetroën glasses are available to purchase on Citroën’s lifestyle web store at the equivalent of $116.
