It's pretty widely accepted that those at the pinnacle of automotive journalism hold some of the most enviable positions and have the most fun of anybody in any line of work. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, for instance, who have been entertaining us on television's biggest stages for over 15 years, first with 22 years of BBC's Top Gear and now with two seasons so far of Amazon's The Grand Tour. As charming as these three characters are, it's difficult to watch their shows without thinking how much more fun it would be if we were the ones tracking hybrid hypercars or taking trips to snowy Colorado in a trio of cheap old Jaguars.

For season three, that's the idea. Alongside the new season of the popular motoring show, Amazon Game Studios is releasing The Grand Tour Game, which will feature the same wild cars, awesome locations, and wacky challenges as the show. The episodic racing title will feature new activities each week in accordance with the latest episode of The Grand Tour.

The Grand Tour Game will be the first console release for Amazon Game Studios when it launches for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 15, although the development team has no lack of experience. Creative director Craig Sullivan has quite a résumé when it comes to arcade-style racing games. He previously worked as a director at Criterion Games, a British developer affiliated with Electronic Arts. There, Sullivan was largely responsible for the open-world action racer Burnout Paradise and three critically acclaimed titles in the popular Need for Speed franchise.

Beyond the weekly content based on the show's third season, The Grand Tour Game features cars and challenges from the first two episodes of seasons one and two. Players will get the chance to pilot the trio of hybrid halo cars around Portimão, Portugal, just like the series premiere, and we'll finally get to see if we can stop Hammond from spinning the Rimac Concept One off a small cliff during that ill-fated hill-climb in Switzerland. The game also features four-player split screen multiplayer, and those who preorder will unlock May's Lada-based fire engine, Hammond's mostly wooden eco car, and Clarkson's purple V-8 beach buggy.

Its $29.99 price and GameCube-era graphics set low expectations. But the combination of industry-veteran game design and the chance to roleplay three old white guys with the best jobs in the world sounds like a good one to us. The Grand Tour Game is available to preorder now, and the third season of The Grand Tour premieres on Amazon Prime January 18.
