The Great Resignation, major store closings continue

Welcome back to the What's Going There Newsletter! I hope everyone has been having a great start to their new year.

To get things started, I took a look back at the closures, openings and announced locations. Last year saw the closure of the last remaining Sears and Kmart stores in the lower Hudson Valley but also saw the long-awaited opening of At Home and Stop & Shop in the Shops at Nanuet as well as the official announcement that Trader Joe's will be coming to Yorktown.

I also got word that Bed Bath & Beyond in the Spring Valley Marketplace is closing and I will have more details on lohud.com.

In the world of dining, lohud food reporter Jeanne Muchnick also took a look back at the 35 restaurants that closed in 2021 across Westchester and Rockland counties. Closures included Ben's Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant and Caterers in Scarsdale and Temptations Cafe in Nyack.

In Dutchess County, Poughkeepsie Journal reporter Geoffrey Wilson has the scoop on Norma's Corner Shoppe, a Queens-based bakery, coming to Wappingers. Co-owned by Crystal River Williams and Denise Plowman, the shop will offer baked goods and sandwiches.

Poughkeepsie Journal reporter Saba Ali checked in with some Black and minority-owned businesses to see how they're doing a little over a year more support was put in place "in the wake of the social justice movement."

According to a report by USA Today reporter Paul Davidson, the "Great Resignation" continues as the amount of people quitting their jobs "hit an all-time high in November."
