- transmission jerks due to eco system
Purchased As New
I loved this van when I first bought in Nov 2008. I replaced a 07 Odyssey for the 08 and what a mistake! After about 4,000 miles, the vehicle would "jerk" when the ECO system would engage/disengage. I went thru multiple repair attempts to correct the problem and in the end Honda Corporate stated this is normal. I ended up trading in the vehicle for a 11 Sienna and have been happy ever since. I have owned 5 Hondas and never again. FYI just days after trading in the Odyssey Honda came out with two major recalls for the ECO system and the brakes! Great job Honda....read morehide

The brake pedal goes all the way to the floor when pressure is applied.
The dealer replaced the master cylinder and other parts. This did not help. Honda says this is normal in the 2008 odyssey.
Beware of brake problems in the 2008 van..very hazzardous.

- Looks, good ride, great for kids
- Lousy gas mileage
I'm a lifelong Honda lover - 81 Accord, 87 CRX, 01 Civic, etc and did lots of research before choosing this van. We picked this over the Toyota mostly because of our history with Honda and because the gas mileage was 1 mpg better than the Toyota. WHAT A MISTAKE! Granted, I do a lot of around town driving, but I am averaging between 12 and 15 mpg, while doing everything I can to save gas (don't carry a heavy load, don't brake hard, etc). Even when doing lots of highway driving, I haven't broken 20 mpg. For a vehichle that was supposed to be 19 city and 25 highway, I'm VERY Dissapointed to say the least. Dealer only said to let it break in to 7500 miles. Well, now has 9500 and nothing has gotten better. Internet research now shows lots of people have this problem, but no one seems to know why some vehicles meet the MGP and others fall far short. In the end, with rising gas prices, I'm left holding the bag on a vehichle that doesn't come close to meeting gas efficiency claims. Otherwise, car runs fine. It's just frustrating that the 1994 Mercury Villager we traded in for this one (and we hated, by the way - horrible paint peel problem) got better mileage than our new car (it routinely got 21 mpg on an average tank of gas)....read morehide

- Comfortable Easy Driver, Roomy, High Resale. Decent Milaege Low Maintenance cost.
- MAJOR ENGENEERING FLAW
I have a 2006 EXL Odyssey, it is beautiful I and have been very happy untill now. 36,000 mile service and I have them look at a bucking when in Cruise and over 45 to 65 or above. The bucking or jerking is annoying and is directly related to the ECO Economy system where the engine switches from 6 cylinders to 3 cylinders for fuel savings. It switches back and forth and is supposed to do it flawlessly. Only in cruise is this noticable. It did for maybe 34,000 miles and then it started to buck or lurch. It is not really severe jerking, but, it jerks enough to be annoying. The Dealer says they can not fix it and that it is normal. They say it is not exactly seemless in it's transfer from in to out and back again. I have no idea when it started but, I think between 34,000 and 35,000.
This is a MAJOR ENGINEERING FLAW and I would not recomend you buy any Honda product that has this system called ECO untill they fix it at the factory. I am going to seell my Odyssey with ony 36,000 on it and 2 1/2 years of owner ship because of this FLAW. I am extremely disapointed and have owned 4 Honda's. 3 Accords and the Odyssey. I am going to look into the Lemon Law here in VA....read morehide

- Median fuel economy in the minivan category. Leather seats easier to clean than cloth.
- Slower acceleration due to curb weight of vehicle. 2nd row center seat, pain to stow.
Parent(s) (more so my father than my mother) bought our new '08 Odyssey several weeks ago. It replaces our aging line of Chrysler minivans ('93 Grand Caravan LE and '98 Caravan - base).
Very nice handling, especially during those critical accident avoidance "swerves" (only did it once). I feel that on accelerating from a full stop (ex. at a light from red to green) is a bit sluggish when I compare it to our '93 Caravan (also a V6, 3.3L). Also the '08's engine fan seems to start and stop intermittently when we have the AC on and am adjusting the climate zone temperatures. Not sure if that's good or bad, since I have no other experience with a Honda vehicle in the past (other than a uncle's ancient Civic).
The 2nd row center seat is a pain to stow away. So far, neither my dad nor I have had luck stowing it. I'm going to check the manual to see if I can figure it out from there. With the 2nd row center seat removed (captain's chair split), it can still be a pain getting in or out of the 3rd row. The best thing to do is remove the 2nd row center, slide the left captain's seat over, and then have 3rd row passenger disembark from the left side.
I have a personal issue with the longer slowdown time of the ABS-equipped brakes. I'm thinking it may be due to a combination of things: the 6300 lb. curb side weight (without passengers or driver), the addition of drivers and a full load of passengers and a large party's worth of food and supplies, the effect of the "anti-lock brake" system....read morehide

- Great smooth ride, confort and interior ergonomics, great seats, mp3 plug, reverse camera
- non, so far
This is a wonderful, and confortable van, and my review is for a 2008 model. I am puzzled why people are in the 08 review saying "15 months and I am trading it". Then these are useless reviews on an older model. Just a thoght that bothered me.
The EX-L is our replacement of a 04 Odyssey EX, and it is a total, 100% improvement, from the ride and confort, to the interior and quality. When my wife notices the difference and "loves it", it's quite a comment. During our test drive, we loved the van so much that we decided to buy it, rather then lease it. Great van....read morehide

- Ride, Sound system, Comfort, Looks
- Gas mileage poor
I had a 2005 Odyssey had a few problems with mechanics, all covered under warranty and traded it in for the 2008. Loved the upgraded features standard with the '08 model (especially the back up camera), The ride is great. I don't understand the other reviews from the unsatisfied customers. I find the Odyssey to be the most reliable in comparison with the T&C, which I had. In 2 years changed the front brakes 3 times. Poor workmanship compared to the Odyssey. We love our Odyssey and recommend it to anyone that's looking for a minivan.
The trims are the best selection in the van market. Mostly the EX-L trim comes with all the toys besides the Navi. Love it....read morehide

- Exceptional motor and handling. Great gas mileage
- Horrible fit and finish, poor erogonimics. Sold it within the first year.
Honda means quality, especially brand new, right? I'll start by saying the positives. First the engine power was incredible for a minivan. This model having the cylinders cutting out for increased gas mileage made the sale. The problem with this system is keeping it engaged. To work at highway speeds, you have to go over the speed you wish to go, then slow down watching for this very small light to appear on the dash behind the stearing wheel to appear. Once it comes on you better not sneeze or move. One light press on the gas will kick those cylinders back on.
Fit and finish was horrible. I had a wind noise in the sun roof they could not find. The styrofoam in the dash rattled on every medium and hard bump in summer...every bump in winter. Oh, and if the road had any vibration, the speedometer jumped around. The right passenger door had to be adjusted twice and still was to hard for my 6 year old boy to open (I had to always use the remote). The left passenger headrest rattled because it didnt' fit right, the leather on the back seat was coming loose at the bottom, the brakes made a metal to metal sound when applied with any pressure...yeah, great quality. Erogonomically, just some anoyances like air vents that only angle down far enough to hit your face, unless you are the driver...he/she gets almost no air because the air vent is behind the large shifter mounted on the dash.
This model is also supposed to have extra sound deadening. My old 1999 Dodge caravan, 2006 Mustang GT, and 2005 Dodge Dakota with a V8 have less road noise than this van does. I would actually have to pull over on interstate to hear phone conversations. I had never had and still haven't had to do that in any other vehicle to this day. Be aware...read morehide
