Hyundai Ioniq 9 Confirmed, Genesis Hybrids ComingHyundai
  • Hyundai has announced a next-gen hybrid system that will power a growing lineup of gas-electric models.

  • Along with confirming the Ioniq 9's name, Hyundai said that all Genesis models will finally be available with a hybrid powertrain.

  • In 2027, Hyundai will start selling models with a new plug-in-hybrid system that's claimed to have a range of over 550 miles.

Hyundai has released a road map outlining its plans for the next several years and beyond. The company's new strategy will focus on expanding its hybrid footprint in various ways. For instance, Genesis—Hyundai's luxury brand—will offer gas-electric powertrains for the first time. Buried among all of today's announcements is that Hyundai has confirmed the name of its upcoming three-row electric SUV, which will be called the Ioniq 9 when it debuts later this year.

Hyundai Is High on Hybrids

As part of its 2024 CEO Investor Day, Hyundai said that it expects a surge in demand for hybrids, specifically in North America. In preparation, the company aims to double the current amount of hybrid models it offers from seven to 14. That accounts for the Genesis lineup too, which will have a hybrid option for every gas-powered model.

Hyundai also revealed some details about its next-generation hybrid system dubbed TMED-II. An enhanced version of the existing hybrid powertrain, it's said to provide "significantly improved" fuel efficiency and performance. It sounds like we won't have to wait very long to find out specifics, as Hyundai says TMED-II will reach production models starting early next year. Sometime down the road, hybrid Hyundais will also offer "smart" regenerative braking and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality. The company will build the hybrid vehicles alongside its EVs at its U.S. factory in Georgia.

A New Plug-In Hybrid Is on the Way

Hyundai still plans to sell 21 EV models by 2030, but like some other automakers, the company is also investing in gas-electric alternatives to help bridge the gap. While it currently offers several plug-in-hybrid models, those use the more common parallel system (read more about that here). The new "extended-range EV" that Hyundai has announced will be a series hybrid, meaning it'll have a gas-engine generator but its propulsion system will be purely electric.

Hyundai's forthcoming PHEV is expected to begin mass production in North America (and China) sometime near the end of 2026 and reach dealerships in 2027. The new plug-in system will debut on large SUVs, possibly the Hyundai Palisade and Genesis GV80, and eventually expand to other models. The new PHEV is said to have a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration and be capable of traveling more than 550 miles before the gas-fed generator needs a fill-up.
