Hyundai Teases Sleek-Looking Three-Row Ioniq 9 Electric SUV
Hyundai is teasing the Ioniq 9, a three-row electric SUV that will be revealed in November.
The Ioniq 9 was first previewed by the Seven concept back in 2021.
The design doesn't appear to have changed drastically from the concept, with a long, streamlined body and pixelated lighting elements.
Not only did the Hyundai Ioniq 5 win Car and Driver's 2022 EV of the Year award and then take top honors again in 2024 with the high-performance Ioniq 5 N, but the electric crossover is also popular with buyers. In 2023 it racked up nearly 34,000 sales, and the Ioniq 5 has already crested the 30,000-unit mark through the third quarter of this year. Now Hyundai is looking to build on that success by entering the three-row EV SUV segment, releasing the first teaser images for the Ioniq 9 that will be revealed in full this November.
The Ioniq 9 was actually originally previewed in 2021 by the Seven concept, but the model's numerical moniker has increased in the years since, perhaps to allow for Hyundai to slot an Ioniq 7 into the middle of its EV lineup at some point in the future. The Ioniq 9 will become Hyundai's largest EV and will boast three rows of seating. The electric SUV will ride on the same E-GMP platform that underpins not only the other Ioniq models but also Kia's EV6 and three-row EV9. The Ioniq 9 is expected to be closely related to the latter.
Hyundai calls the Ioniq 9's design language "Aerosthetic," a term that Hyundai hopes will highlight how a focus on aerodynamics has led to a clean and elegant design. The shadowy profile view teased today shows sleek bodywork with swept-back lines, with an unbroken crease that runs from the headlights to the taillights. The lighting appears to continue the pixelated theme started by Hyundai's earlier EVs. A sketch of the front end shows a row of horizontally oriented lights, with an additional bank of pixels below them.
Overall, the design of the Ioniq 9 appears to remain fairly true to the original Seven concept, with a long wheelbase and a thick D-pillar. Hyundai says it will release more teasers as the official debut of the Ioniq 9 nears.
We expect the Ioniq 9 to go on sale in the United States at some point in 2025.
